LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lubbock creates one-on-one mentoring relationships that reshape futures, strengthen communities and drive economic progress across the South Plains.<\/p>\n
Daniel Ortega is a board member for the organization and is now a Big Brother himself, a decision he said has made a big impact on his life.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd it\u2019s really rewarding. You get to see different life, different people and different stages in their life,\u201d Ortega said. \u201cHe obviously makes me want to be a better person.\u201d<\/p>\n
The organization connects children with adults who support growth, education and long-term success.<\/p>\n
Witnessing his \u201cLittle\u201d grow and improve his education during their time together has been the most rewarding aspect, Ortega said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s been a lot of firsts for us, so being able to take him to do things that maybe he hasn\u2019t experienced before,\u201d Ortega said. \u201cAnd seeing his confidence.\u201d<\/p>\n
For Ortega, mentoring sparked his desire to give back to the Lubbock community.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s one of those things where once you get out into the community, you see how much a need there is, especially right now,\u201d Ortega said. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of families that could use a lot of help, and so it\u2019s just made me want to do this more.\u201d<\/p>\n
For those considering volunteering, Ortega said it\u2019s worth it.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt doesn\u2019t take a whole lot for you to have a big impact in the community and in these kids\u2019 lives, so if you\u2019re thinking about it, I would highly recommend it,\u201d Ortega said.<\/p>\n
During National Volunteer Month, Ortega shows community service can inspire current and future generations to lead and support others.<\/p>\n
