{"id":266797,"date":"2026-04-26T07:43:18","date_gmt":"2026-04-26T07:43:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/266797\/"},"modified":"2026-04-26T07:43:18","modified_gmt":"2026-04-26T07:43:18","slug":"texas-high-school-baseball-team-completes-undefeated-regular-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/266797\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas high school baseball team completes undefeated regular season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Cougars capped off an undefeated season with an 11-1 defeat of Klein Forest on Friday night and will await their first opponent in the Class 6A Division II\u00a0playoffs on Saturday, May 2.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tomball&#8217;s\u00a0record of 32-0-1 includes a tie game with Class 5A Division III Montgomery back on Feb. 26, and marks the first time in school history that the baseball team has gone undefeated. It also comes one week removed from being named the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chron.com\/sports\/highschool\/article\/high-school-baseball-rankings-22209941.php\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">No. 2 high school team in the nation<\/a>, according to Baseball America.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t happen hardly ever in baseball,&#8221; Tomball coach Doug Rush told Chron. &#8220;There are too many games, for whatever reason, every single close game, we&#8217;ve won by one or two runs. Usually, you&#8217;ll lose two or three of those. Every team will go through a seven or eight-game slump for hitting, and we happened to go through that and kept winning games.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>If Tomball can follow this up, it will be the sixth school in state history to do so.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reporternews.com\/story\/sports\/high-school\/2024\/06\/06\/ira-baseball-finishes-season-undefeated-uil-class-1a-state-title\/73977845007\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Abilene Reporter News<\/a>, Ira High School was the fifth school in Texas since 1951 to complete a perfect season after its Class 1A state title in 2024. Before that, Argyle was the first team since the 2003 Lorena Leopards to complete a perfect season, going <a href=\"https:\/\/txhighschoolbaseball.com\/featured_news\/37861\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">37-0 en route to a Class 4A state title<\/a> in 2018. The two other schools to complete perfect seasons, according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/txhighschoolbaseball.com\/featured_news\/37861\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Texas High School Baseball<\/a>, are Colmesneil (23-0) in 1986 and South San Antonio (35-0) in 1967.<\/p>\n<p>The Cougars usually boast a talented roster, but this one has depth, with sophomores, juniors, and seniors all regular contributors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Seniors C.J. Sampson and Catcher Hopkins are both committed to play for Texas A&amp;M next year and are considered two of the top high school prospects in the nation. Sampson, normally a member of the starting rotation, went three and a half weeks without pitching due to a shoulder injury, but hit over .500 in district play. Hopkins, normally the team&#8217;s starting catcher and the best in the state at the position, spent time playing shortstop when the team&#8217;s starter was injured.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Left-hander Blake\u00a0Edling and right-hander Colton Igal were both key junior contributors on the mound, while sophomores Nolan Rush and Keagan Fosdick are batting in the two and three-holes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Tomball is a baseball town and it has been for years,&#8221; Rush said. &#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of talent on this team\u2014 they&#8217;re all just a bunch of grinders.
