Dallas could become the backdrop for a rare Republican midterm convention <\/a>this fall as President Donald Trump and party leaders test a new way to rally <\/a>voters ahead of November.<\/p>\n

Holding conventions every two years is routine for state parties, including Texas. National political conventions, by contrast, are typically reserved for presidential cycles.<\/p>\n

A midterm gathering headlined by the president would break from that model, potentially igniting a campaign sprint to the general election while also serving as a traditional celebration of the GOP.<\/p>\n

While no final decision has been announced on whether Republicans will go forward with their mini-convention idea, Texas offers a natural fit, as it is critical for the financial and political health of the party.<\/p>\n

National and local pep rally<\/p>\n

The event would give Republicans a chance to offset\u00a0headwinds that historically hinder the party that controls the White House. It also would boost Texas Republicans running in the fall election.<\/p>\n

Bridging party factions<\/p>\n

The Texas GOP includes both traditional business conservatives and hard-line\u00a0MAGA activists. A Dallas convention offers a venue to show unity, or at least manage the optics of it.<\/p>\n

The movement in some states to redraw congressional boundaries\u00a0started last year<\/a> in Texas when it approved a new map to increase the GOP\u2019s House majority. A convention could highlight the five races the party hopes to win here. Some of those candidates are in trouble.<\/p>\n

Texas voters have given Republicans control of state politics for a generation and more, ushering in an agenda of low taxes, light regulation, business relocations and high-profile culture war fights. A Dallas event would double as a live exhibit of the GOP\u2019s governing model.<\/p>\n
