A local barber is transforming the haircut experience for children with autism by creating a sensory-friendly environment and organizing a community walk.<\/p>\n
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 A Corpus Christi barber is changing the way kids with autism experience haircuts \u2014 turning something that can feel scary and overwhelming into something fun and comfortable. By creating a calm, welcoming space and taking the time to connect with each child, he\u2019s helping build trust one haircut at a time.<\/p>\n
For many families, like Angela Gonzalez, a simple haircut isn\u2019t simple at all.<\/p>\n
“Like the black cape \u2014 she doesn\u2019t want it to touch her \u2014 and then the sound of the scissors. There are a lot of stimulating things that go into a haircut that maybe you and I haven\u2019t even realized until having a child with special needs,” Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n
For children with autism, the sounds, textures and environment of a barbershop can feel overwhelming.<\/p>\n
But for First Class Barber Studio owner Jacob Espy, those challenges became a calling.<\/p>\n
“I have two nephews who are autistic, and every day is either a challenge or an adventure \u2014 and sometimes a battle,” Espy said.<\/p>\n
After seeing his nephews struggle with haircuts, he knew something had to change.<\/p>\n
“We\u2019re trying to bring acceptance and education so we can teach people how to minimize those negative aspects of autism and turn them into positives,” Espy said.<\/p>\n
He started with his barbershop \u2014 creating a space designed with sensory needs in mind.<\/p>\n
“I just try to make these kids as comfortable as possible. I purchased tools that are a little quieter because that helps minimize their anxiety and improves their experience,” Espy said.<\/p>\n
But Espy didn\u2019t stop there. He organized the \u201cBarbers Walk for Autism\u201d to spread awareness \u2014 teaching others how small changes can make a big difference.<\/p>\n
Something Dr. Jennifer Scott says matters.<\/p>\n
“I love that he is putting this walk together. A lot of people are aware of autism, but now it\u2019s time to move into acceptance \u2014 making sure this community is included,” Scott said.<\/p>\n
Gonzalez says she never imagined a haircut could be life-changing for her child.<\/p>\n
Because sometimes, it\u2019s not just about a haircut \u2014 it\u2019s about understanding, patience and inclusion.<\/p>\n
One step. One cut. One child at a time.<\/p>\n
“Something as small as that can really change someone\u2019s life. That\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do \u2014 change lives, normalize these kids, help them feel confident and ready for school,” Espy said.<\/p>\n
Gonzalez says the challenges haven\u2019t gone away.<\/p>\n
“I\u2019m a mom of a child with special needs, and there are still a lot of challenges when it comes to haircuts. She\u2019s 20 years old, and nothing has changed \u2014 she still doesn\u2019t like them,” Gonzalez said.<\/p>\n
