EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 A routine traffic stop in East El Paso escalated into an arrest after a driver allegedly refused to comply with police commands and physically resisted officers, according to court documents.<\/p>\n
Gene Thomas Morales, 37, an El Paso Community College professor, was taken into custody on Friday and charged with resisting arrest, search, or transport, records show.<\/p>\n
Morales livestreamed the encounter on his Facebook account. <\/p>\n
According to a complaint affidavit filed by El Paso police, the incident began when an officer conducting radar enforcement on Springwood Drive clocked Morales driving 47 mph in a 30 mph zone. <\/p>\n
The officer initiated a traffic stop near Dawwood Street, where Morales pulled over.<\/p>\n
Police say Morales questioned the reason for the stop and declined to immediately provide identification, insisting he did not need to show proof of the alleged speeding violation, the document stated. <\/p>\n
The officer informed him that failure to identify himself could result in arrest, but Morales continued to refuse, according to the affidavit.<\/p>\n
The situation escalated when Morales allegedly refused repeated commands to exit his vehicle. <\/p>\n
RELATED: Video shows EPCC professor arrested after livestreamed traffic stop<\/a><\/p>\n Officers on scene warned that he could be forcibly removed if he did not comply. <\/p>\n When additional officers arrived, they attempted to pull Morales from the vehicle, but he continued resisting, police said.<\/p>\n Authorities deployed a Taser multiple times before successfully removing Morales from the vehicle and placing him in handcuffs. <\/p>\n Even then, officers reported continued physical resistance during the arrest, the document stated.<\/p>\n Court records indicate Morales was later brought before a magistrate judge, where probable cause was found for the charge. His bond was set at $1,000.<\/p>\n
