Parrott, who was arrested last month in connection with the brutal 1990 murders of Cheryl Henry and Garland “Andy” Atkinson, died while in the custody of the Lancaster County Department of Corrections in Nebraska.<\/p>\n
He was scheduled to appear at an extradition hearing on Thursday where officials would seek to have him transferred back to Houston.\u00a0<\/p>\n
His death was confirmed by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. The cause of death was not immediately available.<\/p>\n
Parrott was accused of killing Henry, 22, and Atkinson, 21, following the couple’s night out at a west Houston club.<\/p>\n
A security guard found their necks slashed in an undeveloped lot on Enclave Parkway in west Houston the next day. Atkinson was bound to a tree. Henry had been raped and left under a pile of debris, authorities said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Their murders went unsolved until this year, when police said Parrott was connected to the killings through DNA evidence.<\/p>\n
Parrott was arrested by an FBI SWAT team at his Lincoln, Nebraska, apartment on March 25. He’d remained in custody since then. Harris County prosecutors said they intended to seek detention once Parrott arrived back in Texas.<\/p>\n
Parrott’s name had never come up in connection to the killings before this year, officials said. However, he was known to authorities.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Parrott was a serial police impersonator. He was charged with impersonation of a public servant in 1988, 1989 and 1996. He was convicted, and from 1996 to 1999, served three years of a 20-year sentence before being released on parole. He was also accused of a sexual assault, though that case was later dismissed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Parrott was also believed to be connected through DNA to a 1990 sexual assault and robbery in northwest Houston, officials said. He was never charged with that crime.<\/p>\n
Authorities said that Parrott might have had other unknown victims, and asked for the public’s help in gathering more information about crimes that might be connected to him.<\/p>\n
