It\u2019s hard to believe the fights being picked these days.<\/p>\n

Despite no real evidence that displaying the Ten Commandments will have any meaningful impact, it\u2019s now been ruled legal to require them in Texas classrooms. El Paso schools appear to be making the move<\/a>, but\u00a0I have no idea what is happening in Lubbock<\/a> classrooms, and that’s kind of the point.<\/p>\n

\u200d\u2642\ufe0f The Reality for Lubbock Parents and Students<\/p>\n

I\u2019m firmly in the \u201cwho cares?\u201d camp. You can spend all day working yourself into an aneurysm over this topic, but let\u2019s start with the basics\u2014your child doesn\u2019t have to be in that classroom. There are options, including homeschooling. And beyond that, it\u2019s not really your job to fight every battle for someone else\u2019s kids.<\/p>\n

There are all kinds of things displayed in classrooms that quickly fade into the background. I\u2019m sitting here right now, and I can\u2019t recall what was on the walls of most of my classrooms\u2014except maybe a giant periodic table in chemistry. These things become wallpaper faster than anyone wants to admit, and they rarely have the lasting impact people claim.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m sure there are people in Lubbock eager to impose their beliefs on young minds, but the truth is, it\u2019s probably not going to work the way they think. Kids are smarter than they\u2019re given credit for\u2014they\u2019ll see it, process it, and move on without much thought. I\u2019d say save your energy for teaching\u2014or re-teaching\u2014what you want them to know at home.<\/p>\n

There’s more to Lubbock than dust and tumbleweeds. We actually do some things WAY better than the competition. <\/p>\n

Lubbock gets joked about a lot \u2014 flat, dusty, windy \u2014 but when you see it from above, especially at sunset or night, it\u2019s actually pretty beautiful.<\/p>\n
