What other way to explain the significant difference between what the club swings at on the road compared to what it\u2019s willing to do at home. And the numbers\u00a0\u2014 or anxiety\u00a0\u2014 seem to ramp up even more when the Rangers<\/a> have realistic chances to score.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you see chases like we\u2019re having, maybe guys are trying to do too much and trying to slug with traffic instead of getting basic base hits,\u201d manager Skip Schumaker<\/a> said Wednesday ahead of the Rangers\u2019 homestand finale with the New York Yankees. \u201cWe\u2019ve done it on the road; we just haven\u2019t done it at home.\u201d \u00a0<\/p>\n

The numbers are nothing short of stunning. \u00a0<\/p>\n

According to MLB Statcast, on the road, where it should be tougher to score, the Rangers are among the most discerning teams in baseball. They rank in the top 10 of lowest percentage of swings at pitches outside the zone (27.7%, ninth overall) regardless of situation and become even more discerning with runners in scoring position (27.3%, fourth). The exact opposite is the case at home. The Rangers have the fourth-highest overall chase rate (32.5%) at home, and it goes higher (34.3%) with runners in scoring position. \u00a0<\/p>\n

The result: An offense that is hitting .255 with runners in scoring position on the road, 12th in MLB; .217 at home, which ranks 24th.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Which begs the question: Whether the park inhibits the carry on fly balls or not, have the Rangers manufactured a fear of it in their own heads? \u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say fear, but [the discrepancy] is something I\u2019m focused on. You can say, \u2018Ballpark Factor,\u2019 and I understand that. But when you see guys chase with runners in scoring position, it makes me feel like we\u2019re trying to do more than we\u2019re capable of,\u201d Schumaker said.<\/p>\n

\u201cTeams are hitting home runs and we\u2019re not. I\u2019m more focused on, why are we not scoring with guys on base? If we do that, the slug will eventually happen. Right now, I\u2019m wondering what we can do better as a staff to help provide information for our guys to get the big hit, not the big home run.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Individually, the difference in chase with runners in scoring position at home compared to on the road is glaring with almost every player, with the exceptions of\u00a0Joc Pederson and Danny Jansen, who have both been more discerning at home than on the road. \u00a0<\/p>\n

Corey Seager, for example, chases with runners in scoring position just 25.8% of the time on the road, but it jumps to 45.5% at home. Jake Burger jumps from 29.8% away to 44.0% at home.
