On Friday, the risk is upgraded to a slight risk for the Houston area. Rainfall over the two days is expected to reach between 1 and 3 inches, with up to 4 to 5 inches in isolated areas, according to the NWS.

Cameron Batiste, the lead meteorologist at the Houston-Galveston office, said Houstonians should expect rain all day Friday.

Sign up for the Hello, Houston! daily newsletter to get local reports like this delivered directly to your inbox.

“We’ll have multiple rounds of rainfall moving in beginning early Friday morning and lasting throughout the day,” Batiste said. “We’re expecting chances for some heavy rainfall that could lead to instances of street flooding as well. … So be sure to take precautions. If you see any flooding on the roadways, be sure not to drive through it.”

The rain will also bring lower temperatures after several days of 90-degree weather earlier this week, Batiste said.

“For tomorrow, [we’re] only looking at temperatures in the mid to upper 60s and potentially even lower than that, depending on how much rain we get,” Batiste said. “Then throughout the weekend it will be more seasonal, looking at high temperatures on Saturday and Sunday in the 70s and then overnight temperatures in the 50s.”

Batiste said the rain should leave the area by Saturday.

Rainfall throughout the month has brought nearly all of Harris County out of “moderate drought” conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.

On March 31, the U.S. Drought Monitor map had all of Harris County under moderate drought conditions. However, as of Thursday, the map showed that 7.9% of the county was still classified under that category.

Statewide, 75% of Texas was still considered to be in a moderate drought. That’s down several percentage points from 89% in late March.

In April, Houston has received more than 5 inches of rain, which Batiste said is about an inch-and-a-half above normal for the month.

Provided/NWS Houston-Galveston Office The rainfall forecast from the NWS Houston-Galveston office on April 30, 2026.
