But this week, the full flower moon is kicking off the beginning of the summer season.<\/p>\n<p>Skygazers have a lot to look forward to because there will be two opportunities to see the full moon in May of 2026. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/spaceplace.nasa.gov\/full-moons\/en\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">NASA<\/a>, that typically only happens every two and a half years.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what to know about the celestial events.<\/p>\n<p>Those in Texas can expect to see the full flower moon overhead on Friday, May 1, according to The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.almanac.com\/full-moon-may\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Old Farmer\u2019s Almanac<\/a>, North America&#8217;s longest-running periodical for gardening and astronomical data.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the blue moon, which is where the phrase &#8220;once in a blue moon&#8221; comes from, will happen on Sunday, May 31.<\/p>\n<p>When they are active, the nearside of the Moon will be fully illuminated. It can look pretty dramatic, appearing brighter and larger than usual, especially when looking at it as it&#8217;s near the horizon.<\/p>\n<p>A full moon always rises around sunset. You can step outside to see it on Friday night. Where you are watching from determines how good your view is. The more shielded your area is from street and porch light pollution, the better.<\/p>\n<p>The National Weather Service (<a href=\"https:\/\/forecast.weather.gov\/MapClick.php?textField1=29.708877&amp;textField2=-98.045857\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">NWS<\/a>) forecast says it will be cloudy, so it might become difficult to see at certain times. There is a 50% chance of rain, and it will be about 65 degrees, so take a sweater and stay alert for any storm warnings.<\/p>\n<p>The Old Farmer\u2019s Almanac cites that the May flower moon will reach peak brightness at 12:23 p.m. Yes, around lunchtime. Though it may seem odd, NASA explains that during a full moon, the Moon is directly opposite the Sun. This &#8220;peak&#8221; moment can happen at any time, not just when it is dark out.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on what orbit stage it&#8217;s in, the Moon can be as far as 252,088 miles away from Earth. On Friday, NASA says it will be 249,180 miles from us.<\/p>\n<p>The full flower moon gets its name from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/topic\/Algonquin\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Algonquin<\/a> peoples, according to the Old Farmer\u2019s Almanac. The North American tribe originally lived in the forest region of the valley of the Ottawa River, per Britannica. It refers to the floral bloom that occurs around this time of year. Other names it goes by include the planting moon, budding moon, and leaf moon.<\/p>\n<p>Per Moon Omens, an astrology website that offers daily horoscopes, Friday&#8217;s full moon will happen while the Moon is in the sky section of the zodiac sign Scorpio. It &#8220;offers us chances to gain new insights into patterns, attachments, and dynamics that are ready to be transformed,&#8221; a blog\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.moonomens.com\/full-moon-in-scorpio-2026\/\" data-link=\"native\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">post<\/a> reads.\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The month of April brought many showers to San Antonio.
