CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 Water conservation isn\u2019t easing in across the Coastal Bend, it\u2019s slamming into place.<\/p>\n
Local leaders are rolling out aggressive measures to cut usage, from inmates washing patrol vehicles with reclaimed water to City Hall considering a four-day work week to reduce daily demand.<\/p>\n
At the Nueces County Sheriff\u2019s Office annex, a new program is already underway. Inmates are using reclaimed water stored on a flatbed truck, filling buckets and washing sheriff\u2019s vehicles by hand.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s part of a broader push by the county to trim water use by at least 25 percent.<\/p>\n
Sheriff J.C. Hooper says the crackdown goes beyond car washes. Inside county facilities, officials are rethinking daily operations, including how often uniforms get cleaned.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe wash a lot of uniforms, a lot of laundry every day,\u201d Hooper said. \u201cWe\u2019ve scrutinized our load volume and frequency\u2026 and we think we\u2019re going to be able to make some savings.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the City of Corpus Christi is eyeing changes that could impact thousands of employees.<\/p>\n
City Manager Peter Zanoni says one idea on the table: compressing the work week.<\/p>\n
That could mean four 10-hour days instead of five or a \u201c9\/80\u201d schedule, where employees get an extra day off every two weeks.<\/p>\n
The logic is simple: fewer days in the office could mean less water used across city buildings.<\/p>\n
The city currently uses more than one million gallons of water every day.<\/p>\n
Councilwoman Carolyn Vaughn says the proposals may be popular with employees, but they\u2019re also about necessity.<\/p>\n
\u201cI understand they\u2019re talking about a four-day work week,\u201d Vaughn said. \u201cThat should save water.\u201d<\/p>\n
City staff are now reviewing multiple conservation strategies, with more decisions expected soon.<\/p>\n
From jail cells to City Hall, the message is clear: everyone is being asked to help to cut back.<\/p>\n
