This past Wednesday, the Rapids\u00a0hosted their USL Championship neighbors, Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC, in the third edition of the \u201cI-25 Derby\u201d. In a\u00a0back-and-forth\u00a0contest, the two sides played to a tight contest\u00a0that\u00a0went to\u00a0extra time following a 1-1 draw in regulation. With\u00a0each team scoring\u00a0a goal\u00a0apiece\u00a0in the final five minutes of extra time, the match headed to a shootout\u00a0to\u00a0determine\u00a0who would advance to the next round.\u00a0In\u00a0suspenseful\u00a0fashion, the Rapids came out on top\u00a0by a final score of 5-4\u00a0following seven rounds, moving on to the\u00a0Quarterfinal round for the first time since 2007.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Houston also saw success in their Open Cup match on Wednesday, defeating Louisville City 2-1\u00a0at Shell Energy Stadium. Similarly to the Rapids\u2019 match, this contest\u00a0also\u00a0went to\u00a0extra time following a 1-1 draw at the end of\u00a090 minutes. Playing hero for the\u00a0Dynamo was Ezequiel Ponce, who scored in the 101st\u00a0minute to secure the victory for his side.\u00a0<\/p>\n
These clubs\u00a0have already faced off\u00a0once\u00a0this season, with\u00a0the Rapids dominating the\u00a0first\u00a0matchup\u00a0on April 11.\u00a0Colorado came out on top 6-2 thanks to stellar performances from multiple players.\u00a0Braces from Rafael Navarro and then-debutant Kosi Thompson,\u00a0paired with a goal from Josh Atencio,\u00a0lifted the Rapids to their biggest victory\u00a0up to this point of the season. The top performances led to Navarro, Thompson, and Head Coach Matt\u00a0Wells\u00a0all being named to\u00a0MLS\u2019\u00a0Team of the Matchday.\u00a0<\/p>\n
