{"id":27663,"date":"2025-10-30T11:41:08","date_gmt":"2025-10-30T11:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/27663\/"},"modified":"2025-10-30T11:41:08","modified_gmt":"2025-10-30T11:41:08","slug":"texas-supreme-court-rules-judges-can-refuse-same-sex-marriages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/27663\/","title":{"rendered":"Texas Supreme Court rules judges can refuse same-sex marriages"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Texas judges who refuse to perform same-sex marriages based on &#8220;sincerely held religious beliefs&#8221; do not violate the state\u2019s rules on judicial impartiality, the Texas Supreme Court ruled on Friday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The court\u2019s ruling amended Canon 4 of the Texas Code of Judicial Conduct, which prohibits judges from letting any activities outside of their official judicial role cast doubt on their impartiality or interfere with their duties. <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The amendment reads: &#8220;It is not a violation of these canons for a judge to publicly refrain from performing a wedding ceremony based upon a sincerely held religious belief.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The decision, which was added to the state&#8217;s judicial conduct code on October 24 effective immediately, follows years of debate in Texas after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/supreme-court-same-sex-marriage-date-lgbtq-10929289\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Supreme Court legalized same-sex marriages in the country in 2015<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">In 2019, Waco Justice of the Peace Dianne Hensley was accused of violating the canon for refusing to marry people based on their sexual orientation, citing her Christian beliefs.
