Voters in Robstown selected three members for a key water district board, with Myra Alaniz emerging as the new director. <\/p>\n

ROBSTOWN, Texas \u2014 Voters in Robstown made their voices heard Saturday in a closely watched election tied to ongoing water concerns, selecting three members to serve on the board of Nueces County Water Conservation and Improvement District #3.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Twelve candidates appeared on the ballot, with the top three vote-getters \u2014 Myra Alaniz, current director Ramiro Alejandro Jr. and Belinda \u201cShorty\u201d Valadez \u2014 earning seats on the board. Alaniz, who received the most votes, will serve as the district\u2019s new director.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The race drew heightened attention as drought conditions continue to strain water resources across the Coastal Bend.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alaniz, who has been outspoken about water management in the area, said she believes the community has been overlooked.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe city of Corpus Christi does not care about our community,\u201d Alaniz said.<\/p>\n

The district covers areas north of Robstown toward the banks of the Nueces River, near several of Corpus Christi\u2019s groundwater wells \u2014 a key point of concern for residents.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Alaniz criticized how untreated groundwater has been handled, saying it has impacted water quality.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they cared about our community, they wouldn\u2019t be dumping that untreated well water into the river that we pull,\u201d she said. \u201cNow we can\u2019t pull that water because it has high TDS, arsenic and whatever else is in there. So now the water is compromised.\u201d<\/p>\n

Which is why Alaniz says the district had to turn to the interconnection deal with Corpus Christi Water.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In January, the district approved an agreement to provide the city with up to 5 million gallons of untreated groundwater in exchange for 3 million gallons of treated water and a connection to the CCW system.<\/p>\n

On Friday, CCW Chief Operating Officer Nick Winkelmann said crews should complete that connection in the next week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re taking the required bacteriological samples today and yesterday, and we\u2019re hoping to have that interconnect fully functional at some point early next week,\u201d Winkelmann said.<\/p>\n

At the polls, voters emphasized the importance of cooperation among board members moving forward.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s important for people who are being re-elected or elected to be able to work together \u2014 not only as a board, but with surrounding communities,\u201d said Katrina Alejandro, whose brother, Ramiro Alejandro Jr., secured one of the three seats and oversaw the interconnection deal with CCW as board president.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Others stressed the urgency of the situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cSet your differences aside and focus on what\u2019s most important \u2014 the people,\u201d said Robstown resident Jimmy Ramirez. \u201cWe need water now.
