They leave behind glowing &#8220;trains,&#8221; which NASA describes as &#8220;incandescent bits of debris in the wake of the meteor&#8221; that can last several seconds to minutes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>These meteors are commonly referred to as &#8220;shooting stars.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>During its peak, about 50 meteors can be seen per hour, but clear conditions and dark skies are a must for best viewing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/whats-up-may-2026-skywatching-tips-from-nasa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">According to NASA<\/a>, the meteors are derived from leftover comet particles and bits from broken asteroids.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When the Earth passes through these debris trails, the particles burn up in the atmosphere, creating bright streaks in the sky.<\/p>\n<p>The comet that the Eta Aquarids originate from is 1P\/Halley.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Halley&#8217;s Comet takes roughly 76 years to orbit the sun and is named after Edmund Halley, who discovered it in 1705, <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/meteors-meteorites\/eta-aquarids\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">though historic references\u00a0<\/a>that seem to reference the comet date back centuries before the 18th century, according to NASA.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The last time Halley&#8217;s Comet passed through the inner solar system was in 1986 and won&#8217;t return until 2061.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nTips for skywatchers \u00a0                    <\/p>\n<p>The Eta Aquarids meteor shower is expected to peak between May 5 and May 6.
