Lubbock continues to grow and expand, but it\u2019s doing it in a way that feels a little\u2026off. The city\u2019s population is growing at about 1% a year. Meanwhile, it feels like chicken strip places are growing at about 10% a year. That second number is completely made up\u2014but you know exactly what I mean.<\/p>\n

Growth Outside the Loop (A Love\/Hate Thing)<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not anti-growth, and I\u2019m definitely not anti\u2013new places to eat. I love all of that. I just wish more of it stayed inside the Loop. Instead, we keep stretching farther and farther out, and it starts to raise some long-term questions.<\/p>\n

Two big ones:<\/p>\n

Are we neglecting what we already have?Are we making things harder to get to than they need to be?Why the Inside of the Loop Still Matters<\/p>\n

If you don\u2019t keep investing inside the Loop, eventually you\u2019re not \u201cgrowing,\u201d you\u2019re just relocating Lubbock<\/a>\u00a0one strip mall at a time. Revitalization is always easier before things get rough\u2014not after.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve always said if Lubbock really wanted to get downtown poppin\u2019, they\u2019d drop something big down there. A movie theater. One of those combo food\/bowling\/arcade places. Something that gives people a reason to go, hang out, and stay awhile.<\/p>\n

The problem? Even the folks who want to push downtown forward seem a little hesitant. There\u2019s still that concern about \u201cwhat else comes with it,\u201d and whether it scares off the exact customers they\u2019re trying to attract.<\/p>\n

The Transportation Thing No One Talks About<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the other side of this\u2014getting around.<\/p>\n

People don\u2019t want to drive as much as they used to. Gas, traffic, time\u2014it all adds up. So now you\u2019ve got more people using rideshares or just trying to keep things closer to home.<\/p>\n

Shorter trips mean more money left over to actually spend somewhere. Longer trips? That\u2019s just money burned getting there.<\/p>\n

And when everything keeps moving farther out, public transportation becomes a nightmare. It\u2019s tough enough already without having to stretch routes out to brand-new developments on the edge of town.<\/p>\n

This Will Catch Up Eventually<\/p>\n

It doesn\u2019t feel like a big deal right now, but it will. That steady 1% population growth\u2014and whatever the real number is on chicken strip expansion\u2014is going to catch up with us at some point.<\/p>\n

Lubbock\u2019s growing, no doubt about it. The question is whether we\u2019re building something that works long-term\u2026or just building farther away from where we started.<\/p>\n
