EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14\/CBS4) \u2014 A 39-year-old man convicted of repeatedly sexually abusing children over several years was sentenced to decades in prison in El Paso.<\/p>\n

An El Paso jury on Friday sentenced Bernardo Gomez to 30 years in prison following a five-day trial. <\/p>\n

The jury found Gomez guilty of continuous sex abuse of a child earlier in the afternoon before returning its punishment verdict later in the day.<\/p>\n

In March 2020, the victim, who was 11 at the time, disclosed to their mother that Gomez had sexually abused them over multiple years, beginning when they were in kindergarten and continuing through fifth grade. <\/p>\n

The victim told investigators the abuse began while the family was living in New Mexico and continued after they moved to El Paso.<\/p>\n

During the investigation, a second victim came forward and reported similar abuse by Gomez. <\/p>\n

Both victims testified at trial about the abuse they endured over several years. Text messages introduced at trial showed Gomez apologizing after being confronted by the victim\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n

The victims in this case showed tremendous courage by coming forward and testifying about the abuse inflicted upon them,\u201d District Attorney James Montoya said. \u201cOur Office continues to prioritize our oldest remaining cases for trial and we are grateful for the jurors who answered the call for service, listened to the victims, and held the Defendant accountable for his heinous conduct.<\/p>\n

Gomez is not eligible for parole and will have to serve the entirety of his sentence day-for-day. He also will be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life.<\/p>\n
