Located in Space 324 of the CAPPA Building, the lab positions UTA at the forefront of a rapidly evolving disciplinary convergence between artificial intelligence, architectural theory, and advanced computational design.

The lab investigates cutting-edge issues at the intersection of AI and design, including issues of design agency, creativity, and the need for orchestrating AI-driven design systems with multiplicity, multimodality and interconnectivity of AI agents for innovative design processes. The lab also addresses issues of data bias and the need to train and fine-tune AI models to overcome challenging shortcoming, and assert agency and authorship in design. At the lab, artificial intelligence strategies are considered as both generative engines and analytical instruments, in pursuit of augmenting architectural agency to achieve new spatial possibilities, enhanced performance, and ecological intelligence.

The Performative AI Lab advances a research agenda grounded in the premise that AI in architecture can no longer be understood through static representations. Instead, it operates as a dynamic, data-informed system of relations, unfolding through iterative and adaptive design processes. Within this framework, architecture is conceived not as a fixed object, but as an evolving field of interactions—continuously shaped by feedback, computation, and environmental data.

Accordingly, at the lab, design systems are articulated through animated workflows that capture the complexity and nuance of AI-driven processes, where generative multiple interconnected AI models are choreographed. Drawing on the pioneering scholarship of Dr. Yousif in AI-driven design methodologies, the lab situates itself within a broader disciplinary shift toward computationally augmented design ecologies, where generative systems and machine learning models operate as co-creative partners in architectural production. These approaches have been shown to significantly expand design solution spaces while addressing ecological performance and resource efficiency across scales.

At its core, the lab explores how AI mediates the interplay between morphology, performance, and responsiveness, engaging multiple scalar registers: from tectonic intelligence at the micro level to the systemic dynamics of macro-scale architectural propositions. This multi-scalar approach aligns with contemporary research emphasizing AI’s capacity to integrate data, generative design, and real-time feedback into cohesive design frameworks for sustainable and resilient built environments.

The Performative AI Lab is equipped with a state-of-the-art 25-foot curved AI-enabled LED video wall and an advanced robotic fabrication system, forming an immersive technological ecosystem that bridges simulation, visualization, and material realization. This infrastructure enables the seamless integration of AI-driven feedback loops, allowing designers to iteratively test and evaluate architectural propositions in real time.

The lab’s overarching mission is to develop next-generation computational design frameworks that address critical global challenges, particularly decarbonization, climate resilience, and ecological performance. The Performative AI Lab builds upon these trajectories by foregrounding design intelligence as an ecological project, where AI is leveraged not merely for design speculation but for rethinking the ontological relationship between architecture and the environment.

Research at the lab launched with two flagship initiatives:

1. Agentic AI and Speculative Ecologies: AI-Driven Design Futures

This project investigates the emergence of agentic AI systems within architectural design, focusing on the development of custom-trained, goal-oriented AI agents grounded in ecological design principles and domain-specific architectural knowledge. Rather than operating as passive generative tools, these systems are conceived as autonomous, reasoning agents capable of perceiving context, iterating through design decisions, and adapting outcomes in response to environmental and performance-based criteria.

Students and researchers will engage in the design and training of multi-agent frameworks, integrating large language models, diffusion-based systems, and performance simulation tools into coordinated, feedback-driven design ecologies. Within this paradigm, AI agents do not simply generate form; they negotiate, evaluate, and evolve design propositions through iterative cycles of analysis and action.

Ultimately, the project proposes a speculative yet rigorously grounded model in which architecture is conceived as an agentic ecology—a field of interacting intelligences—through which AI actively participates in envisioning environmentally attuned architectural futures.

2. Robotics and Materializing AI Ecologies
The other research project is focused on the translation of AI-generated designs into material and spatial systems, with a robotic arm connected to the LED system. By integrating AI with robotic fabrication, the project examines how computational processes can be embedded within the behavioral and performative capacities of architectural artifacts.

The initiative advances a critical inquiry into materiality. Through iterative prototyping, and real-time communication between the robotic arm’s cameras and sensors, and the LED wall will enable new possibilities of robotic fabrication. This way, the lab will produce responsive spatial installations and performative architectural systems that embody ecological responsiveness and adaptive behavior.

Institutional Impact

The establishment of the Performative AI Lab directly supports UTA’s strategic commitment to advancing artificial intelligence across research, pedagogy, and public engagement. As Dr. Yousif notes:

“Our university is deeply committed to advancing initiatives under the goal of embracing AI at UTA. These efforts aim to position UTA as a leader in integrating AI across campus, promoting meaningful impact within the broader community, and preparing our students with the skills and knowledge essential for the future.”

By cultivating an interdisciplinary platform that bridges architecture, computation, robotics, and environmental research, the Performative AI Lab will serve as a catalyst for innovation within CAPPA and beyond—training a new generation of designers capable of operating within AI-augmented, performance-driven design paradigms.

Dr. Shermeen Yousif Establishes the Performative AI Lab at UTA, Advancing the Future of Intelligent, Ecological Design The…

[13
150,152,151
post-279296","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-arlington","tag-arlington","tag-arlington-headlines","tag-arlington-news
["GET
