After stating plainly that the May 5 event would no longer be held, city officials are now saying the event was replaced by a May 3 piñata drop.

On May 3, the city abruptly edited a Facebook post to cancel the planned event, which promised “folklórico dancing, mariachi music, delicious street-style Mexican food, working artists, specialty vendors, and more.” Although officials gave no explanation, the post was edited shortly after, clarifying that the event was replaced by the piñata drop.

The timeline, however, suggests the piñata drop was planned separately rather than as a replacement. Market Square created the Facebook event page for the latter event on April 22.

Left with no official word, commenters speculated. Some pointed to the Wednesday forecast, which currently calls for AM thunderstorms. Others ascribed political motives, blaming everyone from Governor Greg Abbott to ICE. City officials did not comment on the many posts that simply asked: “Why?”

One Facebook user captured the frustration with the lack of information.

“I hope the taxpayers aren’t paying very much money to whoever runs the social media for the city,” he wrote.

A request for more information from Market Square was not immediately returned.
