HOUSTON, Texas \u2013 People in Jamaica and across other parts of the northern Caribbean are rebuilding after Hurricane Melissa. <\/p>\n
Jamaica sustained a direct hit from what historians are calling one of the most powerful Atlantic storms on record. <\/p>\n
Emergency relief flights began landing at Jamaica\u2019s main international airport, which reopened late Wednesday, as crews distributed water, food and other basic supplies.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe devastation is enormous,\u201d Jamaican Transportation Minister Daryl Vaz said.<\/p>\n
Authorities said they have found at least four bodies in southwest Jamaica.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Andrew Holness said up to 90% of roofs in the southwest coastal community of Black River were destroyed.<\/p>\n
\u201cBlack River is what you would describe as ground zero,\u201d he said. \u201cThe people are still coming to grips with the destruction.\u201d<\/p>\n
More than 25,000 people remained crowded into shelters across the western half of Jamaica, with 77% of the island without power.<\/p>\n
