Oh, so we are feeling rather decadent, are we? Well, we are here for a good time, might as well enjoy the taste bacchanal that is a Monte Cristo Sandwich, with many great options available here in Lubbock.<\/p>\n

What Makes A Great Monte Cristo?<\/p>\n

A Monte Cristo is a study in opposites that join together to form a rich, luxurious taste. Savory ham, sweet jam, a sharp cheese like Swiss or Gruyere, and a soft, eggy batter. A humble ham sandwich, but make it bad and boujie and throw that bad boy in the deep fryer.<\/p>\n

First, An Ode To The O.G.<\/p>\n

For possibly decades, the only place in Lubbock to get a Monte Cristo was Gardski’s (r.i.p.). A Gardski Monte Cristo was legendary, and as a kid, it felt beyond fancy. As a young adult, I was hyper-focused on the Bloody Marys, and I’m afraid I took that sandwich for granted.<\/p>\n

My Dad says the best Monte Cristo in Lubbock history was at The Depot restaurant. I also regret never getting to try it.<\/p>\n

Where To Go If You’re In The Sandwich Know<\/p>\n

The uber attractive photo that accompanies this article is my own photography (I’m kinda proud of it) of a Monte Cristo from Bubba’s 33 (6210 Slide Rd). If you have a dainty appetite, bring backup; this sandwich is delicious and very filling.<\/p>\n

I’ve also really enjoyed the Monte Cristo “cigars” at Neighborhood F&B (9806 Quaker Ave), which are smartly served as a shareable appetizer, so the whole table can get in on the action.<\/p>\n

For a Lubbock tradition, head to Spanky’s (811 University Ave) for a Monte Cristo near Tech. Other great options include: Aspen Grill, Bierhaus (in the former Gardski’s location!), and Cheddar’s.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Whatever you end up for this king of sandwiches (and yes, I do mean “King” like 70s Elvis), just be sure to have plenty of napkins nearby- you might get sticky from all that delicious jam.<\/p>\n
