You aren’t imagining it. Lubbock is truly one of the windiest cities in the United States.<\/p>\n
The Numbers Don’t Lie<\/p>\n
According to data from the NOAA, Lubbock consistently ranks near the top for average wind speeds among other U.S. cities.<\/p>\n
On average, our winder speed hovers around 12 to 13 mph. During the spring months, that speed increases to over 20 mphs…and FAR beyond.<\/p>\n
So\u2026Why Is It Like This?<\/p>\n
God doesn’t hate us. Nope. Not by a long shot.<\/p>\n
Honestly, the main reason is that Lubbock is flat. Like..really, really flat. Lubbock sits on the Llano Estacado, which is a massive plateau with very few actual barriers to stop the wind. No mountains or forests means nothing out there to stop the wind.<\/p>\n
Another reason for our ungodly wind is that this part of the country frequently sits between shifting high-pressure systems and low-pressure systems. Pressure makes a HUGE difference when it comes to wind, especially in the spring when the atmosphere seems to not be able to make up its mind.<\/p>\n
