Older adults can now use Plano Rides, a Via service aimed to mitigate the limitations and shortages of current microtransit options. <\/p>\n

Yesterday, May 4, the City of Plano revealed a new on-demand public transportation service for seniors called Plano Rides<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Plano Rides comes after a multi-year discussion about Dallas Area Rapid Transit services in Plano. While paratransit<\/a> options are available, some users have expressed concern for those who do not qualify, as the service is limited to those with physical, cognitive or visual disability. DART GoLink<\/a> services only provide transportation for parts of the city to other DART transit options.<\/p>\n

Through a company called Via<\/a>, seniors can download an app to request a ride within 1.5 miles of Plano\u2019s boundaries. While the sign-up does ask for a birthday to be submitted, it does not stop those who sign up from requesting a ride if you are not over the age of 65. While rides are free until June 4, individual rides will be $1.50, and unlimited day passes will be $3. Those without smartphones can call to request a ride.<\/p>\n

The program includes a fleet of 22 vehicles, six of which are wheelchair accessible. Funding for the program comes from municipal funds generated through city sales tax revenue as part of a nearly $4 million, six-month contract.<\/p>\n
