Being a country music artist has its\u00a0ups and downs, and lately,\u00a0more and more\u00a0artists are being more open about the physical and mental toll of being in the spotlight. In a recent\u00a0interview<\/a>, Parker McCollum gets candid about nearly quitting music and reveals just how burnt out creatively he got that he almost considered walking away for good.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Parker McCollum: \u201cI Was About to Just Hang It Up Completely\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

McCollum admitted that he was one of those artists who were fortunate since his label gave him 100% creative control from the get-go.\u00a0\u201cI told them, I said, \u2018Look, I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0want the money. I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0want your\u00a0advance. I want creative control\u2026And\u00a0they\u2019ve\u00a0kept their word on that 100%.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

That was in 2019. Fast forward to\u00a02025, and\u00a0being in control of his career since then took a toll on the 33-year-old singer-songwriter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He shared, \u201cI was about to just hang it up completely. I just kind of\u00a0had lost\u00a0the buzz creatively,\u201d McCollum admitted. \u201cAnd\u00a0I\u2019d\u00a0been touring nonstop since I was 22 years old. And I was just like, creatively, I was like, \u2018I got nothing.\u2019 And\u00a0so\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0had a conversation with people in my circle about it.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cAnd I kind of got to the point where I was like, \u2018Well, if I\u2019m going to hang it up, go make one more record with just zero f**ks\u00a0given, just do it 100% exactly whatever the hell comes out is what the record is.\u2019\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Getting Back the Spark\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

It seemed that trying to go out with a bang was just what McCollum needed. Since his mindset became \u201cnothing to lose,\u201d he wanted to give everything he had for his\u00a0supposed last\u00a0project. One of those is recording the album in New York, something that the \u201cWhat Kinda Man<\/a>\u201d singer has been wanting to do for a long time. \u201cI was like,\u00a0I\u2019m\u00a0not playing this game anymore. I have nothing in my soul musically, creatively right now,\u201d he says. \u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve\u00a0got to\u00a0go find\u00a0it. I know\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0in\u00a0there. I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0find it. Something is suffocating it, and I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0fake it,\u00a0dude. I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0just go pick some songs that somebody else wrote and cut them and stand up there and smile every night. I\u00a0can\u2019t\u00a0do it. Just\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0work like that for me.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fortunately, one of country music\u2019s good guys, who always has time for his fans, is not yet saying goodbye, finding the spark again after finishing his self-titled album.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was the\u00a0most full\u00a0my cup has ever been in the music business,\u00a0dude. I answered the question. I do still love this. When I left that city, and I was looking out that plane window, and I knew the record I had just cut, it was like, damn, all those records, all those shows, all those nights, all the bulls**t and the awards and the number ones and all that, none of it made me feel the way that record made me feel. I finally had made the record I always wondered if I was good enough to make.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
