<\/p>\nEmergency agencies gather in the Coastal Bend to boost hurricane preparedness, emphasizing a unified alert system to enhance readiness as storm season nears.<\/p>\n
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 The start of hurricane season is less than a month away, and this week emergency agencies from across the Coastal Bend have gathered for the annual hurricane conference.<\/p>\n
The conference focuses on getting the region ready for the worst-case scenario if a powerful storm were to move through the area.<\/p>\n
Emergency Management Coordinator for Corpus Christi Jace Johnson said hurricane preparedness is something they focus on year-round.<\/p>\n

“So we’re just always in a continuous process of updating our plans and training, uh, educating the public, uh, making sure that not only our city teams are ready, uh, our regional partners, we’re all in coordination with each other,” Johnson said.<\/p>\n
Cory Mottice with the National Weather Service said hurricane season is unpredictable, but preparation makes a big difference.<\/p>\n
“There’s always a chance. We always have to be prepared here. As far as this year goes, it’s hard to say what our probabilities are. Every year, the chance of any kind of tropical system impacting somewhere along the Texas coast is almost 90%. So there’s high odds that something will be nearby,” Mottice said.<\/p>\n
Something new this season is the regional reverse alert system, which Johnson said will make an impact.<\/p>\n
“Which before it was just the emergency notification system for Nueces County and the city of Corpus Christi. Now we’ve brought on our regional counties to include San Patricio, Aransas and Refugio. So now we’re all under the same umbrella, under the same branding, which makes it a lot easier for residents in our area to understand,” Johnson said.<\/p>\n
Mottice said the Texas coastline is known for big storms, and while no two are the same, each one should be taken seriously.<\/p>\n
“As far as major hurricanes go, the last one was Harvey in 2017. We average one about every nine years, so we’re closing in on that. So it’s certainly something we always need to be prepared for and have a plan for,” Mottice said.<\/p>\n
Officials said preparing for hurricane season isn’t just about watching the forecast \u2014 it’s about being ready no matter what.<\/p>\n
“The reality is it doesn’t really matter what the forecast is because it only takes one, right, and we want to make sure that we’re prepared \u2014 not only us. Because if it happens to us, we want to be prepared, but if it happens to our neighbors, we want to be there for them as well.
