For more than two decades, Darrell Rodenbaugh has helped shape generations of young performers across North Texas, not through a paid executive role, but as a volunteer.<\/p>\n

Now, the longtime leader of North Texas Performing Arts<\/a> is being recognized with one of the state\u2019s highest honors for community service.<\/p>\n

Rodenbaugh recently received the 42nd Annual Governor\u2019s Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award, presented in partnership with OneStar Foundation. The award recognizes Texans whose volunteer work has created a lasting impact within their communities.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am honored to recognize this year\u2019s Governor\u2019s Volunteer Awards recipients as Texans whose commitment to service is making a lasting difference,\u201d said Texas First Lady Cecilia Abbott. \u201cTheir dedication reminds us that service has the power to unite communities, uplift neighbors, and inspire others to step forward. These honorees represent the very best of Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n

From Local Children\u2019s Theater To National Scale<\/p>\n

Rodenbaugh<\/a>\u00a0first served eight years as board president for North Texas Performing Arts before stepping into the role of full-time volunteer CEO, a position he has now held for 11 years. During that time, the organization has expanded dramatically.<\/p>\n

What began as a local youth theater initiative has grown into a regional arts institution spanning five North Texas locations and serving more than 11,000 students annually. Today, NTPA operates one of the largest youth theater programs in the country, producing a steady calendar of performances, educational programming and community arts initiatives.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn his two decades of service, Darrell has built upon a vision for a local children\u2019s theatre that began thirty-five years ago and transformed it into the largest youth theatre organization in the country,\u201d said Plano Children\u2019s Theatre Founder Sara Egelston Akers. \u201cThis recognition reflects not only his personal commitment, but the power of volunteer leadership to grow something meaningful into something extraordinary.\u201d<\/p>\n

Programs Designed To Widen Access<\/p>\n

Under Rodenbaugh\u2019s leadership, the organization expanded beyond traditional stage productions into programs designed to reach broader groups of students and families. That includes initiatives like NTPA Deaf Theatre, Starcatchers Theatre for performers with disabilities and the organization\u2019s film and video programming.<\/p>\n

For Rodenbaugh, the work has always extended beyond theater itself.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m proud of the team we\u2019ve built and their passion for a vision that everyone should have the opportunity to take the stage and have their voice heard, building confidence, resilience, and character far beyond the spotlight,\u201d said Rodenbaugh. \u201cI\u2019ve seen that impact firsthand in my own children and in thousands of others who tell us there is nothing else they\u2019ve done that better prepared them for life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Recognizing Volunteer Leadership In Texas<\/p>\n

The Governor\u2019s Volunteer Awards are presented annually during National Volunteer Month and honor Texans whose service addresses community needs while strengthening civic connection across the state.<\/p>\n

Recipients are recognized during a reception hosted at the Texas Governor\u2019s Mansion.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy recognizing volunteers like Darrell, we hope to inspire others to get involved and discover how service can strengthen communities and empower individuals to lead,\u201d said OneStar President and CEO Chris Bugbee. \u201cThese stories show that when people step up to serve, they not only meet community needs \u2014 they build connection, understanding and hope.\u201d<\/p>\n
