A viral TikTok retracing the path that Selena ran just after being shot inside a Texas motel in 1995 is giving fans a new perspective on the singer\u2019s final moments.<\/p>\n

In the video, Alexis Laguna<\/a> shared with viewers what Selena Quintanilla\u2019s last moments may have looked like. He started filming at the door of the Corpus Christi motel room where she was shot and then he kept walking, first past a small parking lot, then past the pool area, past another parking lot, down a paved path, and all the way to the lobby of this Red Roof Inn.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe heaviness felt here is unthinkable. There\u2019s a stillness in the air, as if time itself is frozen in that moment,\u201d the text overlay read.<\/p>\n

Judging from the video, it was a long journey. And on March 31, 1995, Selena made it while bleeding from a gunshot wound that would soon leave her dead at the age of just 23.<\/p>\n

By the time she was killed, Selena Quintanilla was already a phenomenon. She had risen to fame as the lead singer of her family band, Selena y Los Dinos, whose Tejano style made her one of the most beloved artists in the American Southwest and Mexico.<\/p>\n

Things were going very well for her in 1995. Her 1993 album Selena Live! had won a Grammy for Best Mexican-American Album. She was 23 years old, happily married to new husband Chris P\u00e9rez<\/a>, and on the verge of crossing over into the English market. But then, one woman put an end to everything.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s more, the woman who killed Selena was someone that she had trusted completely. Yolanda Sald\u00edvar<\/a> had founded Selena\u2019s fan club and eventually became manager of her two clothing boutiques.<\/p>\n

In early 1995, the Quintanilla family suspected that Sald\u00edvar had been embezzling funds from the boutiques, and Selena arranged to meet Sald\u00edvar at a Corpus Christi motel on March 31, 1995, to retrieve missing bank statements and take back control of her finances.<\/p>\n

Where Did Selena Die And How Did It Happen?<\/p>\n

What happened next unfolded in Room 158 (now renumbered 150) in what\u2019s now a Red Roof Inn, but was then a Days Inn.<\/p>\n

Sald\u00edvar shot Selena in the back with a .38-caliber revolver, and Selena ran for her life. She got to the lobby, leaving a 392-foot trail of blood in her wake. And before she lost consciousness, she used her last bit of strength to identify her killer. Motel employees testified that Selena named \u201cYolanda\u201d in \u201cRoom 158\u201d as her attacker.<\/p>\n

When paramedics arrived, her blood pressure was so low that her veins had collapsed. She had lost a large amount of blood because the bullet had severed an artery. Selena was pronounced dead<\/a> at a hospital an hour later. She was just 13 days shy of her 24th birthday.<\/p>\n

The distance that Alexis Laguna walked in his video is the same distance that Selena covered while wounded before she collapsed. As his text overlay reads, \u201cShe ran extremely far.\u201d<\/p>\n

Yolanda Sald\u00edvar\u2019s Conviction And Her Recent Parole Denial<\/p>\n

After Selena\u2019s murder<\/a>, Sald\u00edvar engaged police in a nine-hour standoff in the motel parking lot, sobbing and holding the gun to her own head.<\/p>\n

\u201cI didn\u2019t mean to do it. I didn\u2019t mean to kill anybody,\u201d she reportedly<\/a> told police.<\/p>\n

She told them she had bought the revolver to kill herself and that the gun had misfired during her confrontation with Selena.<\/p>\n

The jury in Houston \u2014 the trial was moved from Corpus Christi because of the enormous publicity surrounding the case \u2014 did not believe her. On October 23, 1995, Sald\u00edvar was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years.<\/p>\n

Her first parole hearing took place in March 2025. The board denied it, citing the violent nature of the crime and deciding that Sald\u00edvar continues to pose a threat to public safety. Her next hearing will be in 2030.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, over the last three decades, Selena\u2019s legacy has only grown.<\/p>\n

More than 50,000 people lined up to view Selena\u2019s body before she was laid to rest. Then-governor of Texas George W. Bush declared her birthday, April 16, \u201cSelena Day.\u201d Her posthumous album Dreaming of You was the first Tejano album to top the Billboard charts. The Grammys gave her a posthumous lifetime achievement award in 2021.<\/p>\n
