CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 The City of Corpus Christi hosted the first in a series of community meetings Monday focused on the region\u2019s water supply, drawing a large crowd to the Seashore Learning Center on Padre Island as residents voiced concerns and asked questions about the future of local water resources.<\/p>\n
Among those attending was Padre Island resident Dutch Wurzbach, who said he wants clearer answers from city leaders about plans to maintain the water supply.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m waiting to hear exactly what we\u2019re going to do, not what we shoulda done,\u201d Wurzbach said.<\/p>\n
Wurzbach, who has lived on the island for 13 years, said residents often do not think about water availability until shortages become a reality.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople take it for granted. They think it\u2019s going to be there when they turn the tap on, until the day that they lose it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

One major takeaway from the discussion was that residents would only see a surcharge if they exceed their assigned water allocation.<\/p>\n
\u201cResidents use water differently than any other account. Residents use water for health, safety, just everyday life. And that\u2019s something we have to take with careful consideration,\u201d said Corpus Christi District 4 Councilwoman Kaylynn Paxson.<\/p>\n
Paxson said the city plays a critical role in water infrastructure, not only for Corpus Christi but for communities across the Coastal Bend.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo we are a regional water supplier. It\u2019s very important to us that we protect that class of users across the Coastal Bend and in all seven counties that we serve,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
For Wurzbach, the issue goes beyond infrastructure or policy.<\/p>\n
\u201cOh everything, are you kidding me, it\u2019s everything until you lose it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
