EL PASO, Texas (KFOX14/CBS4) — May is National Military Appreciation Month, and on Tuesday, the community came out to show their appreciation and honor the legacy of an El Paso World War II veteran.

On April 12, WWII vet Manuel Louis Santoscoy celebrated his 101st birthday, but then, a couple of days later, on April 16, Santoscoy passed away.

On Tuesday, Santoscoy’s son, Patrick, laid him to rest and reflected on the sacrifices he made and on the legacy of his service that will shape generations of their family.

According to his obituary, Santoscoy served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart, the WWII Victory Medal, the Pacific Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Islands Victory Medal; and was severely wounded by a mortar round while fighting in the Philippine Islands.

Patrick explained that his father served in WWII alongside Louis, his father’s twin brother.

“They weren’t separated,” Patrick said, adding that the experience strengthened the bond between the two twin brothers.

Reflecting on his father’s life, Patrick revealed it was not hard to honor his dad as he was a selfless man.

“It’s easy to honor somebody like that, that we know is so special, so kind, so considerate to others,” Patrick said. “This is the least that we can do for a World War two veteran who has done so much for our country.”

Patrick described how his father loved counseling people, taking the time to talk to those around him and encourage them in whatever they were trying to accomplish.

Patrick also described the pride his father took in being recognized as a veteran, saying that his father would always proudly wear his WWII veteran’s cap.

“[He] adored that hat,” Patrick said. “That was something special.”

In the end, bidding farewell to his father, Patrick urged the community to take the time to recognize veterans every chance they can get.

“Well, everybody should… if they do have an opportunity to speak with a veteran [and] thank them for their service,” Patrick said. “Otherwise, we wouldn’t have this beautiful country that we all live in and share together.”
