CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 Corpus Christi City Council has approved a $1.2 million construction contract to improve security at the Civitan Service Center.<\/p>\n
The project will install an electronic chain-link fence around the city facility, where officials say millions of dollars worth of vehicles and equipment are stored.<\/p>\n
City leaders said the added security is intended to help prevent theft, vandalism and break-ins involving city-owned property.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat facility houses a lot of critical city materials,\u201d one city official said during Tuesday\u2019s council meeting. \u201cJust like any of us at our homes, we would want to protect things that we use and that we\u2019ve invested in. The city\u2019s no different.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the city, more than 200 vehicles are located at the service center at any given time. Officials said much of the equipment stored there is essential for city operations and would be difficult to replace if damaged or stolen.<\/p>\n
Construction on the fencing project is expected to be completed by November.<\/p>\n
