Victor Wembanyama was uncommonly cool<\/a> when he was ejected from Game 4 of the Spurs-Timberwolves West semifinal series.<\/p>\n

He saved his frustrations for Game 5 at Frost Bank Center. Back in the starting lineup two days after his ejection, the San Antonio<\/a> center torched Minnesota<\/a> in the game\u2019s opening minutes Tuesday night and set the tone for a 126-97 Spurs win<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Spurs are now one win from a date in the Western Conference finals against the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Wembanyama was unstoppable early, scoring 16 of San Antonio\u2019s first 24 points in six minutes. He finished the first quarter with 18 points and 6 rebounds. When the final horn sounded, Wembanyama had tallied 27 points, 17 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks. He shot 9 of 16 from the field and 2 of 5 from 3.<\/p>\n

He was a force from inside and out and on both sides of the court as Minnesota struggled to counter his length and defensive presence.<\/p>\n

Spurs turn back Timberwolves rally en route to blowout<\/p>\n

The Timberwolves, who are playoff-tested and have mounted more than their share of postseason rallies, didn\u2019t stay down when the Spurs took an 18-point second-quarter lead.<\/p>\n

They cut the deficit to 12 at halftime and took control early in the third quarter to tie the game at 61-61. But the Spurs punched back with nine straight points and finished the third quarter on a 19-6 run with a 98-71 advantage.<\/p>\n

There was not another Minnesota rally from there as San Antonio turned the fourth quarter into a laugher.<\/p>\n

Spurs counter Timberwolves\u2019 length<\/p>\n

The Timberwolves are used to leveraging the length of their front line to control the post against overmatched opponents. But there\u2019s no such advantage against a Spurs team that counters with length and athleticism up and down the lineup.<\/p>\n

The Timberwolves went multiple sustained stretches without scoring. And there was simply too much Wembanyama, too much Stephon Castle<\/a>, too much Keldon Johnson<\/a> and too much Dylan Harper<\/a> for Minnesota to compete.<\/p>\n

Castle, the 6-foot-6 second-year guard, posted an efficient 17 points alongside 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. He shot 8 of 11 from the field and leveraged his strength and size when he attacked the basket.<\/p>\n

Johnson lived up to his Sixth Man of the Year billing with 21 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals off the bench. Like Castle, he shot 8 of 11 from the field.<\/p>\n

And Harper, the 6-5 rookie guard, filled the stat sheet with 12 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block. He was a game-time decision with knee soreness, but showed no signs of injury in his 25 minutes.<\/p>\n

The Spurs shot 53% from the field and limited the Timberwolves to 39% shooting while controlling the paint on both ends. They secured a 50-42 advantage on the boards and an 8-4 edge in blocked shots.<\/p>\n

Anthony Edwards<\/a> led Minnesota with 20 points, but turned the ball over four times. Julius Randle<\/a> tallied 17 points and 10 rebounds but wasn\u2019t efficient. He shot 6 of 17 from the field and missed all four of his 3-point attempts.<\/p>\n

Jaden McDaniels<\/a> posted 17 points and 6 rebounds while limited by foul trouble in 30 minutes. Ayo Dosunmu<\/a> was arguably Minnesota\u2019s best player Tuesday night with 16 points, 9 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and 2 blocks in his freshly secured spot in the starting lineup.<\/p>\n

Minnesota will have a chance to stave off elimination back at home in Game 6 on Friday night (9:30 p.m. ET, Prime).<\/p>\n

Reid was the recipient of the Wembanyama elbow in Game 4 that resulted in a flagrant 2 ejection for the Spurs center. Officials aren\u2019t seeking to maintain control and aren\u2019t letting much of anything go in Game 5.<\/p>\n

He closed out with a foot under Victor Wembanyama after a Wembanyama jumpshot. Wembanyama landed on Gobert\u2019s foot and fell to the court. He appeared to avoid injury, but officials didn\u2019t take much time to confirm a flagrant 1 for Gobert.<\/p>\n
