{"id":291570,"date":"2026-05-13T18:18:12","date_gmt":"2026-05-13T18:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/291570\/"},"modified":"2026-05-13T18:18:12","modified_gmt":"2026-05-13T18:18:12","slug":"greg-abbott-expands-task-force-targeting-repeat-offenders-from-houston-to-other-large-cities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/291570\/","title":{"rendered":"Greg Abbott expands task force targeting repeat offenders from Houston to other large cities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A violent crimes task force targeting repeat offenders, set up seven months ago in Houston, will broaden its activities to other big cities across Texas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/directory.texastribune.org\/greg-abbott\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Greg Abbott<\/a> on Wednesday directed the Texas Department of Public Safety to \u201cimmediately expand\u201d the task force to the Austin, San Antonio and Dallas-Fort Worth areas. The unit would coordinate with local and federal partners to identify and arrest violent repeat offenders, he said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cDecades of criminal justice research and operational experience demonstrate that most violent crime is committed by repeat offenders,\u201d Abbott said <a href=\"https:\/\/gov.texas.gov\/uploads\/files\/press\/Freeman_Martin_DPS_Texas_Repeat_Offender_Task_Force_Expansion_FINAL.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in a letter<\/a> to DPS Director Freeman Martin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Houston operation has led to the arrest of 728 repeat offenders, with 455 considered to be a high threat, and more than 300 drug and weapon seizures, the governor said in the letter.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">The Texas Tribune has reached out to police officials in Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth and San Antonio. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">These cities, along with Houston, have reported a drop in violent crimes in the first quarter of 2026 compared to the same period last year, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/majorcitieschiefs.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/MCCA-Violent-Crime-Report-2026-and-2025-First-Quarter.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a new survey<\/a> by the Major Cities Chiefs Association. The survey looked at the combined totals of four categories: homicide, rape, robbery and aggravated assault. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">When Abbott <a href=\"https:\/\/www.texastribune.org\/2025\/10\/01\/texas-greg-abbott-houston-public-safety-task-force-repeat-offenders\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">launched the task force<\/a> in October, he said its efforts would expand to other parts of the state but did not specify where.
