We’ve had a couple of special requests from us to look for a couple people, but most of the time it’s just ones we encounter on traffic stops.”

Rutledge said most immigration-related arrests in Wichita County will likely continue to involve federal immigration holds rather than new illegal-entry charges under Senate Bill 4.

“I think most of our encounters are going to be 287 arrests,” he said. “I don’t see us having the illegal-entry arrests or the actual charges filed, but there may be some cases where they apply. Most are still going to continue to be 287.”

The law has sparked intense debate over whether states should play a larger role in immigration enforcement, an area traditionally handled by the federal government.

Dr. Linda Veazey, chair of the political science department at Midwestern State University, said the case reflects a broader constitutional issue involving federalism.

“It’s kind of about an issue of federalism,” Veazey said. “Usually, immigration enforcement is solely up to the federal government because it’s about immigration and naturalization. States traditionally haven’t had a role in that. That’s been left to the federal government.”

Veazey said Texas leaders pushed for stronger state enforcement because they believed the federal government was not taking enough action at the border.

“Texas is interested in doing immigration enforcement mainly because they didn’t see the federal government as being as active as the state leaders want it to be,” she said.

Supporters of the law argue that stronger enforcement measures are needed to address illegal immigration and secure the southern border.

“The people that are here illegally need to be addressed,” Wichita Falls resident Steve Garner said. “Those people that do not have the proper paperwork need to be sent back to wherever it is that they’re from. Then they can apply legally and properly to become citizens of the United States.”

Opponents, however, warn that the law could lead to racial profiling and grant too much authority to local law enforcement agencies.

“It’s an abuse of power, in my opinion, because it allows people to be profiled,” said Chelsea Streeter, chair of the Wichita County Democratic Party. “People can just be pulled over because a law enforcement officer thinks they might be here illegally.”

Streeter also argued immigrants contribute positively to the economy and said lawmakers should focus on reforming the immigration system rather than increasing deportations.

“Immigration is good for our economy. It’s good for our country,” she said. “Instead of trying to deport everyone, we should be streamlining the process and reforming the immigration process.”

The legal battle over Senate Bill 4 is expected to continue in federal court as opponents challenge whether Texas can enforce immigration laws traditionally handled by the federal government.

You can now stream KFDX and Texoma’s FOX live 24/7 on your smart TV with KFDX+, our brand-new app!
