LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – A Lubbock attorney is celebrating a major milestone this year: 50 years of service to his community.<\/p>\n
Bob Craig, who specializes in civil defense, was admitted to the bar in 1976 and has spent 50 years representing clients in Lubbock.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat\u2019s interesting to me about law is that it\u2019s always different, there is never the same case, there is always something new and challenging and it makes you think,\u201d Craig said. \u201cSo, I\u2019ve enjoyed my experience of 50 years now practicing law.\u201d<\/p>\n
Craig earned his undergraduate degree from Texas Tech University, then attended Southern Methodist University\u2019s Dedman School of Law. He returned to Lubbock in 1976.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve enjoyed my experience here in Lubbock, wouldn\u2019t trade it for anyplace else,\u201d Craig said. \u201cI was in Dallas for three years going to law school and that was a wonderful experience, but I\u2019m sure glad I got out of Dallas and into Lubbock.\u201d<\/p>\n
Craig says he loves his work here in Lubbock, adding there is an underlying respect between area attorneys, even when they face each other in court.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s fun working with plaintiffs\u2019 lawyers and I enjoy the camaraderie,\u201d Craig said. \u201cYou can go try to beat one another up in the courtroom, but when the day is over you can still be friends and I think that\u2019s important.\u201d<\/p>\n
Craig\u2019s passion for Lubbock far exceeds just his legal work, though. He served on the Lubbock ISD Board of Trustees from 1988 to 2002, including four years as board president.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believe you owe to the community a service,\u201d Craig said. \u201cDidn\u2019t get paid for it, didn\u2019t want to be paid for it. It was my pay back for education for children and I enjoyed my experience.\u201d<\/p>\n
Craig was elected to the State Board of Education in November 2002. He served as chairman of the board\u2019s Committee on School Initiatives and chaired the Committee on School Finance\/Permanent School Fund for two years.<\/p>\n
\u201cEducation is the key,\u201d Craig said. \u201cWe need to provide for our children a good atmosphere where they can learn, they can have good experiences and grow as young people into good adults.\u201d<\/p>\n
Craig said his passion for the work has only grown over time.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe longer I\u2019ve gone the more fun it gets,\u201d he said. \u201cIt would be very difficult, I think, to have a job that you didn\u2019t enjoy. I enjoy what I do.\u201d<\/p>\n
