{"id":293829,"date":"2026-05-15T02:04:23","date_gmt":"2026-05-15T02:04:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/293829\/"},"modified":"2026-05-15T02:04:23","modified_gmt":"2026-05-15T02:04:23","slug":"west-u-to-conduct-citywide-traffic-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/293829\/","title":{"rendered":"West U to conduct citywide traffic study"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWest University Place will conduct a citywide pedestrian safety study to review potential traffic calming measures.<\/p>\n<p>What this means<\/p>\n<p>On May 11, Megan Siercks, a traffic engineer with BGE who led the original study, recommended that they review pedestrian and vehicle traffic in five new locations:<\/p>\n<p>The intersection of Mercer Street and University Boulevard, and on College StreetAround parks, schools, churches and the civic center4100-4200 blocks of Bissonnet StreetWeslayan Street to Bissonnet StreetBuffalo Speedway to Bissonnet Street and Buffalo Speedway to West Holcombe BoulevardThe studies would include observing a 13-hour window from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. for vehicles and pedestrians on Tuesday through Thursday and on Sundays.<\/p>\n<p>The total cost for the studies would be $298,450 and would take place throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>Some context<\/p>\n<p>The study was conducted after city officials said <a href=\"https:\/\/communityimpact.com\/houston\/bellaire-meyerland-west-university\/government\/2026\/02\/11\/west-u-to-potentially-invest-in-traffic-stop-study-after-speeding-concerns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">residents were concerned about speeding at certain intersections<\/a>. The initial study looked into whether or not traffic signals were necessary for those areas.<\/p>\n<p>The study found that installing bulb-outs at four intersections could help address concerns. Bulb-outs are curb extensions that can be used as a traffic-calming feature that widens the sidewalk for a short distance.<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s next<\/p>\n<p>City Council unanimously approved the additional studies. Council member Kalie Rainsberger suggested that some of the proposed studies\u2014like the one around churches and schools\u2014be conducted at times that make sense.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWest U Elementary has a fall festival typically in October,\u201d Rainsberger said. \u201cMaybe if we delay for the fall, you might get something more approximate to what you experience during baseball season.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>No official date was set for the studies to begin, but Siercks said they can begin whenever the city is ready for them to start.\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"West University Place will conduct a citywide pedestrian safety study to review potential traffic calming measures.
