The Graham ISD Technology Department is working on AI guidelines for the district to outline the ethical and effective use of AI to enhance teaching, learning and administrative functions.<\/p>\n
The AI guidelines will be for students, teachers, administrators and GISD staff utilizing AI tools and technologies in classrooms, assessments, administrative operations and decision-making processes.<\/p>\n
The guidelines are also being created to ensure data privacy, equity and responsible AI usage and are set to go in effect in August 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cBy following these guidelines, GISD can harness the benefits of AI while safeguarding students\u2019 rights, promoting ethical AI use, and maintaining educational integrity,\u201d the district wrote in its agenda item.<\/p>\n
Graham ISD Chief Student Services Officer Joe Gordy provided an overview Wednesday, May 13 on policies to the GISD Board of Trustees that will be up for consideration by the board in June, one of which was the in-progress guidelines.<\/p>\n
\u201c(These guidelines) will be embedded in the student handbook, staff handbook and posted on the Graham ISD website,\u201d Gordy said. \u201c…A lot of that is verifying privacy laws are followed by providers that we are working with and ensuring the safety of all of our personally identifiable information of staff or students as we move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n
In December 2025, GISD adopted AI policies that delegated authority to the superintendent to determine the AI training program to be used in the district, verify and report compliance with training requirements and remove access to the district\u2019s computer systems and databases for noncompliance with training requirements.
The policy stated the district would periodically complete audits to ensure compliance with AI training requirements.<\/p>\n
\u201cEmployees and students shall be permitted to explore AI and implement its use in and out of the classroom in accordance with policy and administrative regulations. The use of AI shall only be as a support tool to enhance student outcomes and shall never take the place of teacher and student decision-making,\u201d the policy states. \u201cAny use of AI must comply with law, policy, and administrative regulations relating to student and employee privacy and data security.\u201d<\/p>\n
Students can only use AI tools with teacher permission and are expected to produce original work and credit their sources, including AI tools used in creating the work.<\/p>\n
