An award-winning wrestling coach in the Conroe Independent School District<\/a> (CISD) has resigned amid an investigation into alleged grooming and inappropriate sexual communications with minors.<\/p>\n

William Durning, a former female wrestling coach for The Woodlands High School, is “no longer employed” by\u00a0CISD as of May, a spokesperson told Chron<\/a> on Monday. Durning is currently under investigation by Cy-Fair police.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“We can confirm that Mr. Durning is no longer employed by the District,” a CISD spokesperson said Monday. “We are actively cooperating with and supporting the ongoing investigation by law enforcement. The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our highest priority.”<\/p>\n

Durning is also being investigated by Houston attorney Tony Buzbee<\/a>, who said on social media Sunday his firm “collected hundreds of intimate videos of the women he coached.” Buzbee told Chron he’s been in contact with 17 current or former students as of Monday.<\/p>\n

According to Buzbee, Durning is accused of “grooming” the students in question, in which he allegedly sent “racy texts regarding sex and [BDSM] to students and former students that escalate over time.” BDSM is an acronym that stands for Bondage and Discipline, Dominance and Submission, and Sadism and Masochism.<\/p>\n

Buzbee said he believes the allegations point to a broader issue within Texas school districts, where educators accused of misconduct are sometimes allowed to resign rather than face termination.<\/p>\n

“The bigger picture is that there seems to be a systematic issue within school districts that allows teachers and staff who engage in questionable behavior to resign rather than be fired after an investigation,” Buzbee said. “This coach, as an example, bounced around to several schools, leaving without explanation. Here again, he resigned from The Woodlands after this issue arose.<\/p>\n

“That\u2019s the bigger picture and more important question to be answered in my view. It\u2019s too hard to terminate, so offending teachers resign and pop up elsewhere.”<\/p>\n

Durning, a former college wrestler in Pennsylvania, built a decorated coaching r\u00e9sum\u00e9 in Texas, earning three Texas Coach of the Year honors and coaching multiple state champions.
