Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s Theatre on the Island camp offers immersive acting experiences for kids ages 9-14.<\/p>\n
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi is inviting young performers to take center stage this summer through its Theatre on the Island Summer Camp.<\/p>\n
The program is designed for children ages 9 through 14 and allows students to explore acting, storytelling, and creativity while working alongside university theatre faculty and college theatre majors.<\/p>\n
Thomas Oldham with TAMU-CC joined 3NEWS First Edition to talk about what makes the camp different from others offered during the summer.<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0supported by Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, they\u00a0are fully engaged\u00a0with our university facilities, our university faculty like myself\u00a0and\u00a0our university students who are some of the best and brightest in all of Texas,\u201d\u00a0Oldham said.<\/p>\n
Two camp sessions will be offered in June. The first session, running June 1-5, focuses on classic stories inspired by Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and The Wizard of Oz. The second session, June 8-12, features \u201cTwisted Fairytales,\u201d which puts a creative spin on familiar stories.<\/p>\n
Oldham said campers can sign up for one session or both at a discounted price. Throughout the camp, students will collaborate to create, rehearse, and perform original scenes while building teamwork and communication skills.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe teach all the skills that everybody needs to succeed\u00a0no\u00a0matter what job or career they eventually gain,\u201d\u00a0Oldham said.\u00a0\u201cCommunication, thinking on your feet, collaboration\u00a0and\u00a0creatively solving problems in the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n
The camps run from 9 a.m. to about 3 p.m., with optional early drop-off and late pickup available for an additional fee. Parents are asked to send campers with a lunch and enthusiasm for learning and performing.<\/p>\n
