{"id":30009,"date":"2025-10-31T21:49:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T21:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/30009\/"},"modified":"2025-10-31T21:49:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-31T21:49:12","slug":"arlington-isd-students-learn-science-through-spooky-halloween-experiments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/30009\/","title":{"rendered":"Arlington ISD students learn science through spooky Halloween experiments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cIt\u2019s alive!\u201d fourth grader Harris Hardy yelled as he jumped out of his seat in the Hill Elementary STEM Lab.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Harris watched as his cup of baking soda fizzed up, a chemical reaction to the dish soap and vinegar inside.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Harris, who was dressed as the Cookie Monster from Sesame Street, was just one of many fourth graders dressed in costumes as Hill Elementary teachers hosted Frankenstein Day at the Arlington school on Halloween.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey always say kids learn from people they love, and who wouldn\u2019t love teachers that create this environment for them,\u201d Principal Kasie Longoria said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The leader of the event was Kellie Pringle, a fourth-grade teacher who dresses as Frankenstein\u2019s monster each Halloween.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pringle, who joined Hill Elementary seven years ago, said the event was inspired by one of her mentors, who would go all out in decorating her classroom for Halloween.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI kind of stole that idea,\u201d Pringle said. \u201cI was like, \u2018That\u2019s the kind of teacher I want to be.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Each year, parents, teachers and volunteers help transform the school\u2019s STEM Labs into Frankenstein\u2019s laboratory overnight. (Chris Moss | Arlington Report)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have an excellent community at Hill,\u201d Pringle said. \u201cWe send the call out and people show up.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the two adjoined labs, teachers and volunteers walked students through hands-on experiments each representing a different science concept.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Evelen Hartkopf, 9, said her favorite experiment was the DIY lava lamps that display states of matter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhenever we did our lava lamps, we put like oily stuff and mixed it,\u201d Evelen said. \u201cWhen we put the oil on top, they would be separated.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jayce Ray, 10, enjoyed the potion station the most because he put what he had learned about mixtures into action.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s water, cotton and powder, then you mix it up and it makes this,\u201d Jayce said, holding out a vial with a purple liquid.<\/p>\n<p>Allowing the kids to use concepts they have learned in the real world is not just fun, but it also helps them grasp what they are learning better, Pringle said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"780\" height=\"520\" data-attachment-id=\"313138\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/fortworthreport.org\/aisdfd1_moss\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/fortworthreport.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/AISDFD1_Moss-.jpg?fit=2560%2C1707&amp;quality=89&amp;ssl=1\" data-orig-size=\"2560,1707\" data-comments-opened=\"0\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;4.5&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;Canon EOS R10&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;A volunteer shows students a chemical reaction during Frankenstein Day at Hill Elementary in Arlington on Halloween. (Chris Moss | Arlington Report)<\/p>\n<p>Experiences like Frankenstein Day shape the memories of elementary school for students, Longoria said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt 8:30 a.m., it\u2019s a big reveal,\u201d she said. \u201cThey walk in, see Ms. Pringle dressed as Frankenstein and they\u2019re floored. Our kids here are from pre-K to sixth grade, and this is probably one of their core memories out of their whole experience in elementary school.
