Former Corpus Christi City Council member Billy Lerma announced Monday he is running for City Council District 1.<\/p>\n
CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas \u2014 Former Corpus Christi City Council member Billy Lerma announced Monday he is running for City Council District 1, setting up a potential campaign for a seat being vacated by incumbent Everett Roy.<\/p>\n
Lerma made the announcement on Facebook, citing a desire to bring “practical leadership that listens, follows through, and stays focused on the issues that affect families every day.”<\/p>\n
A Corpus Christi native and Tuloso-Midway graduate, Lerma served in the U.S. Marine Corps, worked for the U.S. Postal Service before retiring, served as a planning commissioner, previously held a seat on the Corpus Christi City Council, and has spent more than 25 years on the Tuloso-Midway Independent School District board.<\/p>\n
His campaign priorities include securing the city’s water future, strengthening neighborhoods, improving city services, investing in streets and drainage, and supporting responsible growth.<\/p>\n
The announcement comes after Roy said in April he would not seek reelection, citing a desire to focus on family and business ventures. Roy has represented District 1 since taking office in 2023.<\/p>\n
Lerma and Roy have a history in District 1 politics. The two faced off twice \u2014 in 2022, when Roy defeated Lerma to reclaim his former council seat, and again in 2024, when Roy led Lerma by just two votes with all 15 voting centers reporting.<\/p>\n
District 1 covers North Beach, Downtown, parts of Uptown, Annaville and Calallen.<\/p>\n
