first reported last week<\/a>, back in March, firefighters were called to a house fire in Arlington, Texas, where a little girl was trapped inside.<\/p>\n\u201cI can hear my daughter\u2019s scream still to this day,\u201d said Alex Salinas. \u201cIt\u2019s the scariest feeling. It\u2019s like, \u2018what do you do?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Salinas says 11-year-old Delilah spent more than a month in the hospital getting treatment for second- and third-degree burns to her arms and face.<\/p>\n
When she got out, the fire department was called back to her house, only this time it was far less consequential.<\/p>\n
Firefighters gave Delilah a ride to school on her first day back since the fire. She said it was the highlight of her recovery, although she wasn\u2019t too thrilled to be back at school.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, not at all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Where did she want the fire department to take her?<\/p>\n
\u201cMcDonald\u2019s,\u201d Delilah laughed.<\/p>\n
Firefighters didn\u2019t need to take Delilah to McDonald\u2019s because after her story first aired, McDonald\u2019s came to her.<\/p>\n
Anthony Grissett owns several McDonald\u2019s franchises, and when he saw Delilah\u2019s story, he delivered. Joined by firefighters, Grissett brought lunch for the entire class, which made him quite popular … until Grimace walked in the door.<\/p>\n
They had enough gifts and goodies for everyone. More importantly, Grissett provided encouragement.<\/p>\n
\u201cLife has a way to turn tragedy into opportunity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
For Delilah, this was that opportunity.<\/p>\n
Grissett told her that if she does well in school and one day works for McDonald\u2019s, the company will pay for her college.<\/p>\n
She couldn\u2019t believe it.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have never had that happen before to me at all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Delilah says the offer has made her more eager to come to school and work hard. She does not want to waste the opportunity.<\/p>\n
It could cost Grissett and McDonald\u2019s a lot, and yet, he says it\u2019s worth every penny.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is more valuable than money,\u201d he said. \u201cIt provides joy to satisfy people and that is my purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n
