If you actually want to understand Lubbock, skip the city limits sign and head straight to a parking lot. That\u2019s where the true West Texas chaos lives \u2014 swirling wind, runaway carts, and the eternal debate over whether that\u2019s an actual parking space or just a \u201csuggestion.\u201d Our parking lots are more than concrete; they\u2019re personality tests with wheels.<\/p>\n

Here are the five types of people you\u2019ll find in every Lubbock, Texas parking lot \u2014 from 82nd Street to Slide Road \u2014 and which one you secretly are.<\/p>\n

1. The Diagonal Rebel<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll spot them immediately, mostly because they\u2019re taking up two spaces. The Diagonal Rebel truly believes their truck, Jeep, or mid-size sedan deserves extra personal space. Their motto: \u201cIt\u2019s not crooked, it\u2019s artistic.\u201d My mother is an excellent example of a Diagonal Rebel.\u00a0They\u2019ll park across the lines, next to the cart return, or directly in the shade that three other drivers were eyeing. They are the Picassos of poor parking choices, and they sleep soundly knowing you\u2019re judging them. Don\u2019t be like them.<\/p>\n

2. The Cart Wrangler<\/p>\n

Lubbock\u2019s unsung hero. You\u2019ve seen them \u2014 that one person rounding up rogue shopping carts like cattle in the wind. They didn\u2019t even work there. They simply couldn\u2019t handle the chaos. They walk them all the way back to the corral, muttering, \u201cSomebody\u2019s gotta do it.\u201d They deserve free kolaches, a medal, and possibly city funding.<\/p>\n

3. The Wind Fighter<\/p>\n

A West Texas classic. One arm is holding down their hair, the other is wrestling a Sonic bag and a receipt that\u2019s already halfway to Amarillo. Their cart is rolling away, their door just flung open on its own, and they\u2019re yelling, \u201cHOLD ON!\u201d to no one in particular. The Wind Fighter lives every day like they\u2019re in a tornado-themed obstacle course.<\/p>\n

4. The Spot Stalker<\/p>\n

They\u2019ll circle the lot ten times waiting for a front-row spot rather than walk a little. They lock eyes with you as you unload groceries, creating a silent tension harsher than the Texas sun. They\u2019ll trail you like a slow-moving predator until you pull out, then wave politely as if you\u2019re in on it together. You\u2019re not. Despite how obnoxious I find the Diagonal Rebel, the Spot Stalker can be just as bad.<\/p>\n

5. The Social Stopper<\/p>\n

They came for groceries, but this parking lot is their stage. You\u2019ll see them leaning against their truck, arms crossed, chatting for 45 minutes about Tech football, family updates, and \u201cback when this used to be a Kmart.\u201d Their conversation blocks three cars, and they do not care. The Social Stopper turns every errand into a high-school reunion \u2014 and honestly, we love them for it.<\/p>\n

Asphalt Doesn\u2019t Lie, Folks<\/p>\n

Lubbock parking lots are the real community center \u2014 a place where people reveal their truest selves under the unforgiving sun and the howling wind. Whether you\u2019re a Cart Wrangler or a Spot Stalker, just remember: we\u2019re all out here together, dodging carts, chasing hats, and praying our doors don\u2019t slam shut before we get the groceries in.<\/p>\n
