HOUSTON \u2013 When the government shutdown left one Houston TSA employee unable to pay rent, he faced an uncertain future \u2014 packing his belongings and preparing to move into a shelter.<\/p>\n
But after KPRC 2 shared his story, everything changed.<\/p>\n
Thanks to an outpouring of generosity from our viewers, and the support of a local legal aid organization, \u201cJo\u201d \u2014 who asked that we use only his first name for fear of retaliation when he had no legal representation \u2014 is no longer facing eviction.<\/p>\n
Community Steps Up<\/p>\n
Within hours of KPRC 2\u2019s story airing, more than 20 viewers reached out, offering to help Jo avoid homelessness.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs soon as I heard that he was still showing up for work, I just thought a lot of this gentleman,\u201d said Amy Robinette, one of the first people to offer assistance. \u201cHe felt that he needed our help.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another viewer, Hal Pontez, said helping Jo was a privilege. \u201cMy ability to help somebody who\u2019s actually contributing to society through those relatively public positions is an honor for me, really,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Legal Aid and a Second Chance<\/p>\n
KPRC 2 connected Jo with Lone Star Legal Aid, where attorney Jonna Treble took his case. She immediately began working to stop the eviction and ensure his landlord accepted payment.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s important to understand that even if a landlord accepts a late payment, they can still legally move forward with eviction,\u201d Treble explained. \u201cThat\u2019s why we worked to get everything clearly in writing.\u201d<\/p>\n
Treble also arranged for payments to go directly to the property management company \u2014 ensuring Jo didn\u2019t lose eligibility for free legal support.<\/p>\n
\u201cDon\u2019t Give Up Hope\u201d<\/p>\n
With his rent covered and eviction dismissed, Jo says he finally feels like he can breathe again.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt made a big difference because [my attorney] gave me a real strategy to go about it,\u201d Jo said. \u201cNow I can focus back on work and school and just getting back to my normal life.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also had a message for other federal employees struggling during the shutdown: \u201cDon\u2019t give up hope. Look for your resources. Reach out to your media if you feel like you have to. You\u2019re not asking for anyone to let you off the hook \u2014 just to understand your circumstance.\u201d<\/p>\n
