{"id":303737,"date":"2026-05-22T00:33:07","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T00:33:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/303737\/"},"modified":"2026-05-22T00:33:07","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T00:33:07","slug":"steve-sarkisian-blasts-texas-techs-strength-of-schedule","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-tx\/303737\/","title":{"rendered":"Steve Sarkisian blasts Texas Tech\u2019s strength of schedule"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">It\u2019s been 165 days since the Texas Longhorns were left out of the 12-team College Football Playoff and consigned to playing the Michigan Wolverines in the Citrus Bowl.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Consider head coach Steve Sarkisian still frustrated about the selection committee not considering strength of schedule as highly as the committee\u2019s principles intend, ultimately ignoring three top-10 victories for the Longhorns \u2014 on Thursday at the Houston Touchdown Club, when asked about scheduling, Sarkisian fired off a statement that instantly ignited controversy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cThere\u2019s a team in our state in another conference with a schedule that I would argue if I played with our twos and threes, we could go undefeated, and they\u2019ll probably make the CFP this year,\u201d Sarkisian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.statesman.com\/sports\/college\/longhorns\/football\/article\/texas-football-steve-sarkisian-texas-tech-22271123.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">According to ESPN\u2019s strength of schedule metric, that in-state school, Texas Tech, played the No. 46 schedule nationally, well behind the No. 9 schedule faced by Texas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">After playing Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Kent State, and Oregon State in its non-conference schedule last year, head coach Joey McGuire\u2019s program will face off against Abilene Christian, Oregon State, and Sam Houston in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">In the two ensuing seasons, the Red Raiders have one opening each year in addition to schedule games against UAPB, New Mexico, Stephen F. Austin, and Wyoming.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Texas Tech mega booster Cody Campbell fired back at Sarkisian, calling for a series between the longtime conference opponents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">It wasn\u2019t just Campbell, either \u2014 Red Raiders general manager James Blanchard had his own thoughts on the Longhorns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">But with Texas scheduled to play Ohio State, Michigan, and Notre Dame in the next four years, the Longhorns have already made their commitment to playing difficult schedules every year, heightened by the SEC\u2019s move to nine conference games.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">So why is it the responsibility of Texas to fix an obvious issue that Texas Tech created years ago by scheduling non-conference opponents that never had any chance of competing for the College Football Playoff in the future?<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">Bringing up inequities in scheduling reflects an offseason theme for Sarkisian after igniting another recent controversy by <a href=\"https:\/\/go.skimresources.com\/?id=1025X1734621&amp;xs=1&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.usatoday.com%2Fstory%2Fsports%2Fncaaf%2Fsec%2F2026%2F05%2F12%2Ftexas-football-steve-sarkisian-rips-cfp-selection-committee-ncaa-ole-miss-rules-24-team-playoff%2F90033796007%2F%3Ftaid%3D6a02f57432982f0001548988%26utm_campaign%3Dtrueanthem%26utm_medium%3Dsocial%26utm_source%3Dtwitter\" rel=\"sponsored nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">making a dig at Ole Miss\u2019 academic standards<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cOur conferences aren\u2019t equal, so your conference scheduling isn\u2019t the same. The requirements of what you play out of conference aren\u2019t the same, so strength of schedule isn\u2019t the same,\u201d Sarkisian said prior to the banquet. \u201cHow do you compare apples to apples when it\u2019s really apples to oranges? And how do you then put 16 people in a room, and they decide who the at-large groups are?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">The lack of insight into the committee\u2019s thinking irks Sarkisian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _1nfb3k4i _16w9vov1 _16w9vov0 ls9zuh1\">\u201cMy biggest gripe is the selection committee,\u201d Sarkisian told USA TODAY last week. \u201cThere\u2019s no transparency on what exactly the committee is doing.
