It was no mistake.<\/p>\n

If you truly care about what is happening in Port Aransas, you need to subscribe to the South Jetty. No other entity does a better job of consistently providing good, reliable information about what\u2019s going on here in town than the South Jetty.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s true that you could look to Facebook or other social media to find out what\u2019s happening here. But social media doesn\u2019t send professional journalists to meetings of the Port Aransas City Council or the Port Aransas ISD school board to report back on what\u2019s being done with your tax dollars. And it\u2019s only once in a blue moon that other area press organizations do that. The South Jetty does it with great regularity.<\/p>\n
Meetings aren\u2019t the only things we cover.<\/p>\n
By reading the South Jetty, you\u2019ll learn about all what\u2019s going on here in the way of fishing, environmental issues, local business, development, law enforcement and the Port Aransas arts and entertainment scene.<\/p>\n
We report throughout the school year on what\u2019s happening in Port Aransas ISD classrooms and on all manner of Marlin sports.<\/p>\n
We run stories about our community history as well as festivals, the beach, local elections, maritime happenings and people in our community. Our locally based columnists write about spiritual issues, the outdoors, cooking, home topics and even how to mix a good drink.<\/p>\n
The South Jetty was founded in 1971 by Steve Frishman and Suzanna Reeder, both of whom were local residents. (Reeder still is!) Frishman bought out Reeder about a year after the newspaper\u2019s founding. Approximately 10 years later, he sold the South Jetty to Mary and Murray Judson.<\/p>\n
Forty-three years later, the Judsons sold the paper to Port Aransas residents Dan Parker and Kelli Hartig, with the new ownership taking effect on Jan. 1, 2025.<\/p>\n
Hartig is the South Jetty\u2019s co-publisher and general manager. She is a business administration graduate of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.<\/p>\n
Parker, who is editor and co-publisher, has been with the South Jetty for 20 years.<\/p>\n
Born and raised in Port Aransas, Parker graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a journalism degree in 1983. He worked for years at newspapers from California to South Carolina and points in between before returning to Port Aransas and coming on board at the South Jetty as a reporter. He later was promoted to news editor, then editor.<\/p>\n
Also at the South Jetty is reporter Jimmy Willden, a longtime Coastal Bend resident who has been working in journalism for 15 years.<\/p>\n
Willden, who grew up in Corpus Christi, has served as editor of the Nueces Record Star; as a reporter with The News of San Patricio; and as editor of the Karnes Countywide. He also was editor of The Progress, which covers Live Oak and McMullen counties.<\/p>\n
Willden has worked as a freelance journalist for the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, The Bend Magazine and AM-FM Magazine. He also has been a news producer at KIII-TV in Corpus Christi.<\/p>\n
Additionally handling news at the South Jetty is staff writer Vivian Carlson, a Texas Tech University graduate who is uniquely qualified in that she is a retired educator who taught English and other subjects. Carlson also handles classified ads at the South Jetty.<\/p>\n
Many of the South Jetty\u2019s photos are shot by freelance photographers who live in Port Aransas. They include Alex Berksan, Jen Deselms, Mary Goldsmith, Freda Greene, Lee Harrison and Michelle Parker.<\/p>\n
The South Jetty\u2019s advertising director is Keith Petrus, who also publishes an international geocaching magazine. He is a graduate of Southwest Texas State University (now Texas State University).<\/p>\n
Lending her expertise to our advertising department is advertising production chief\/ graphic artist Elizabeth Weaver, a graduate of The Art Institute of Dallas, and Carlson, who doubles as classified advertising manager.<\/p>\n
The South Jetty\u2019s distribution manager is Paul Fain, who is on temporary leave. He has some back-ups filling in, including John Provence and Alex Berksan. Steve Kaake delivers the Visitors\u2019 Guides that we print four times a year.<\/p>\n
When you read the South Jetty, you can be assured that the best practices in journalism, advertising and business are in place with every story, every photo and every ad.<\/p>\n

The e-edition is a duplicate of the print edition. It is posted by early afternoon on Thursday. Print editions are on newsstands by early afternoon on Thursday and put in mailboxes on Friday morning.<\/p>\n
The e-edition is updated as warranted, and both subscribers and nonsubscribers may sign up for free news alerts about which you are notified via email. This is a vital service, most especially in times of crisis, such as a hurricane or pandemic \u2013 both of which we have experienced.<\/p>\n
Readers also may \u201clike\u201d us on Facebook where we provide links, with free access, to breaking news posted on our website.<\/p>\n
The South Jetty has won hundreds of awards in regional, state and national newspaper competitions with newspapers of similar size paid circulations.<\/p>\n
