April Fool’s Day is always on April 1st, but it wasn’t a joke when the Fort Worth Zoo announced that it had added one more tiny trunk to its bunk on that day. The baby elephant, named Sam Houston after the iconic Texan, is the Zoo’s newest Asian elephant calf and the largest calf in the Zoo’s history, weighing a whopping 285 pounds at birth.

Sam Houston is already adjusting well in his new home, where he’s learning how to swim, and it’s pretty obvious he’s a fan of the water. In this clip, we get to see him splashing around with his mom, Bluebell, and the internet is already in love with the adorable little guy.

Keeper Gabby at the Fort Worth Zoo shared more in the caption. “An entry from Sam Houston’s baby diary: his very first swim!

Before making his debut in the public habitat, Sam Houston and his mom, Bluebell, took a few swims in one of the behind-the-scenes pools. The shallow water helped him get used to using his trunk in the water, while also helping Bluebell feel more comfortable with him around the pool.

Safe to say … we may have a water baby on our hands.”

We can’t wait to see more!

Can Baby Elephants Naturally Swim?

You may not guess it, but the Fort Worth Zoo shared in another video of baby Asian elephantSam Houston splashing around that elephants are actually incredibly natural swimmers. They have impressive lung capacity, can hold their breath underwater for up to two minutes, and their massive bodies are surprisingly buoyant.

According to Freedom Animal Reserve Phuket, elephants even have a built-in snorkel thanks to their trunks, allowing them to breathe while mostly submerged for long periods of time. They swim using a dog-paddle motion, and A to Z Animals explains that their powerful legs can keep them swimming continuously for up to six hours.

In the wild, elephants swim to cool off, cross rivers, travel between islands, and sometimes simply for fun. While Sam Houston may never need to swim for survival, something tells us that we’ll all be going to be getting plenty more adorable pool videos from this little guy all summer long.
