<\/p>\nCOPPELL, Texas – A teenager used CPR training to save his friend\u2019s life and was honored with a Citizens Life Saving Award on Friday.<\/p>\n
The backstory:<\/p>\n
Jace Giles was walking home after playing basketball with his friend, Nasir Brobby, who suddenly collapsed.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Without hesitation, the 13-year-old immediately began chest compressions until his mom and Coppell Fire Department EMS arrived.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Physicians at Medical City Children\u2019s hospital credit Giles\u2019 quick action and previous CPR training for rescuing his friend.\u00a0<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
What they’re saying:<\/p>\n
“I panicked because I had no idea what was going on. He\u2019s never done this,” said Giles.<\/p>\n
The unanticipated collapse of Brobby was caused by a birth defect that wasn\u2019t discovered until he got to the hospital.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The blood flow from his left coronary artery has been abnormal his entire life, and so his heart muscle was starving from blood,” said Tia Raymond, a pediatric cardiologist.\u00a0<\/p>\n
This experience also highlighted the importance of CPR training.<\/p>\n
“You never know when someone is going to need their life saved or when you\u2019ll be able to save someone\u2019s life,” said Terese Tunia, Giles\u2019 mother.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Despite this terrifying situation, Giles is simply grateful his friend survived.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“Yeah, I\u2019m just glad he\u2019s alive and well to play sports with me” he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
What’s next:<\/p>\n
Following the rescue, Giles, Brobby, Coppell firefighters, and the 911 dispatchers involved were honored with Citizens Life Saving Awards for their actions during the emergency.\u00a0<\/p>\n
For the kids involved, the biggest victory is getting right back on the basketball court.\u00a0<\/p>\n
