HOUSTON \u2013 As Memorial Day approaches, a local volunteer group invited the Houston community to remember the true meaning behind the holiday through a tradition at Houston National Cemetery.<\/p>\n
For its sixth consecutive year, Houston Millennials, alongside VFW Post 8790, will host its annual Flags of Honor Memorial Day Flag Planting event on Sunday morning at the cemetery on Veterans Memorial Drive. <\/p>\n
The event brought together volunteers from across the Houston area to place American flags at the gravesites of military veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving the country.<\/p>\n
Organizers said the exercise was designed to shift the focus of Memorial Day back to remembrance and reflection.<\/p>\n
\u201cMemorial Day is more than just a three-day weekend,\u201d said Ivan Sanchez, president of Houston Millennials. \u201cIt\u2019s a time to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our nation.\u201d<\/p>\n
Volunteers of all ages were invited to participate. As each flag was placed, volunteers were encouraged to read the veteran\u2019s name aloud and say \u201cthank you\u201d as a personal tribute to the life and service represented at each gravesite.<\/p>\n
Event leaders said the symbolic act may seem simple, but it carries deep meaning for families, veterans, and the broader community.<\/p>\n
