That was four years before John Neely Bryan settled what is now Dallas. By 1850, Hord’s Ridge lost an election to become the county seat as Dallas edged the vote 244 to 216.

Thomas Marsalis and John Armstrong purchased several hundred acres, including Hord’s Ridge, naming the area Oak Cliff in 1887, according to the TSHA. The pair began to develop the land into an elite residential neighborhood, which found quick success.

Marsalis eventually secured lone control of the Oak Cliff area and helped accelerate its growth by connecting it to Dallas by rail. He also sought to make the area a vacation resort destination, opening Oak Cliff Park, which is now the Dallas Zoo, and a hotel to that end.

Article continues below this ad

Oak Cliff incorporated in 1890 with a population of just under 2,500, according to TSHA. By 1900 the elite residential area Marsalis envisioned was done and in 1903 Oak Cliff was annexed by the city of Dallas.

Oak Cliff’s Texas Theatre was also the site of some history in 1963 when Dallas police arrested Lee Harvey Oswald there the night of the assassination of President John F.
