Family of Azriel Reyes-Rodriguez Seek Justice in baby\u2019s death<\/a><\/p>\nDuring a pretrial hearing, Reyes\u2019 attorneys asked the court to reconsider his $1 million bond after receiving competency and insanity evaluation reports from a doctor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The judge denied the request for now, saying the case must continue toward trial because Reyes has already spent a long time in jail awaiting court proceedings.<\/p>\n
Attorneys told the court they are still reviewing a large amount of evidence connected to the case. \u201cI\u2019m still working through it. It is a lot,\u201d one defense attorney said during the hearing.<\/p>\n
Court officials discussed a possible trial setting around July 14, although attorneys on both sides said they are still preparing and reviewing evidence.<\/p>\n
The charges stem from the March 2022 death of Azriel Reyes-Rodriguez.<\/p>\n
According to previous reporting, Reyes was originally arrested on an injury to a child charge after family members said the baby was allegedly dropped in a bathtub.<\/p>\n
Azriel\u2019s family has continued publicly calling for accountability in the child\u2019s death. Xandra Burnett, the baby\u2019s aunt, previously told 3NEWS that Reyes allegedly admitted several times that he dropped the child.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe did admit to, \u2018I dropped him in the tub,\u2019 on multiple occasions,\u201d Burnett said in an earlier interview.<\/p>\n
Family members also told 3NEWS they believe the infant\u2019s injuries were more severe than an accidental fall.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s no way you cannot tell me he didn\u2019t shake him,\u201d Burnett previously said.<\/p>\n
